What's the deal?

What can you do when your faction stops joining the Marshall? Whenever another faction sieges one of our towns only about 4 lords or so at this point join our marshall. It seems they all don't agree with him or something. What can be done about it? Do factions just degrade over time? Every time I get to about day 600 in a campaign I'm forced to restart because my faction that i'm apart of becomes inept and impotent. Is there something I can do earlier as a vassal to ensure this doesn't happen?

Thanks.

I think it's fief size.

When lords get a certain number of fiefs, they have a strong desire to protect them from bandits instead of helping with a war.

So, perhaps you should consider trying to convince other kingdom's lords to join your faction. That way you'll have a supply of lords with only one or two fiefs, willing to go into combat.

If you want to be really powerful, grab all of the high controversy ones. They'll eat away at an opponent's economy to keep their big armies fed.

Both solutions are viable if I have my own faction, but what If I want to remain a vassal of a existing faction? Is it essentially telling me it's time to rebel? Is it not feasible to stay as a vassal of the same faction for more than a certain amount of time?

When there is marshal election try to support other person.
Marshal effectiveness depend largely on the marshal personality/rival/etc2.

Same faction, different marshal = different result, saw it happen.
In one of my game, after losing badly against vaegir, the nord appointed different marshal, suddenly in 1 war they capture 7-8 castle/town without my intervention at all, i'm khergit in war against sarranid.

Another question:

As a vassal, the King keeps trying to award me a fief, that I don't want. Over and over again, no matter how many times I decline the honor, so to speak. How do I get him to give it to someone else?

After about 6 or 7 times of declining it, he gave it to someone else finally. Who then shortly after, defected. Go figure.
