What would you use as your third weapon if you are using lance and sword already

I use the lance quite a lot, and the sword is very useful for close combat.

However, I wish to have a third weapon and I am thinking to use a bow or a throw weapon.

Here are my options:

1) Switch 1h sword to a 2h sword, give up shield, and have a bow + arrow

2) Give up lance and have a bow + arrow

3) Don't give up anything and just add a throw weapon

The decision is quite big, since this means I would need to invest skill point in either power draw or power throw.

Throw weapon seems quite a good add, but you can not really throw very far with it I feel.

I generally use something 2 handed with a longer reach than my primary sword. It helps cutting down archers and crossbowmen.

Well, I'd say that you should throw the lance away and take bow. That's combination I have found most effective. Throwing weapons can be useful but not as good as bow. Still, if you want to keep your lance take throwing weapons, as I suspect you fight on horseback which gives enough big damage bonus for one hit kills without twohanded weapons and shield is always useful.

Best character build I ever made looked like this at the end of the game had 10 in power throw. Weapon set was most commonly a military pick, heavy lance, heater shield, and jarids. This gave me the little bit of range I needed while leaving all combat options open. During sieges I'd switch the lance for another bag of jarid, or lose the jarid and use a siege crossbow for siege tower battles when necessary. This allowed for dependability and a lot of flexibility, adaptable for any situation I came across. I took over the whole damn country myself that game. Good memories.

Go thrown, not bow. Firstly, a thrown weapon only takes one weapons slot, unlike the bow and arrow, which takes two. Secondly, thrown weapons are much better close-range weapons than bows, due to the throwing knife and throwing axe's quick reload. If you get dehorsed (I'm assuming you're mounted, since you use a lance), you can easily backpedal and just headshot everyone who chases you. You can't do that with a bow and arrow. Thirdly, thrown weapons have very good damage ratings with a much lower skill requirement than bows. It seems like you're playing as a mounted knight, so it seems foolish to discard any of your current equips, since that would weaken you where you are currently strongest: close-combat.

Lance + 1h Sword + Shield. Thats the main setup, right? I'd add either a 2h sword or some other 2h weapon with a good reach. The Sword of War is superb in sieges, you just cleave everyone in twain.

I find thrown weapons (especially the throwing axes) to be better on foot, and I prefer to use a bastard sword instead of a 1- or 2-handed sword.

Nothing.  You don't need the extra weight slowing you down if you get mobbed.  Since you're armored (I'm assuming, since you're a horseman), its better to be mobile than better-armed.  If you must, take a set of throwing weapons.

@Merentha

IMO, you're slow enough as it is if you're a knight with full plate, great helm, heavy lance, reinforced heater shield and water-steel (is it still called that?) sword.

I'd get a bastard sword for the flexibility (once you have a high enough one-handed weapon score), and then get a pack of throwing axes or knives.

A shield would be extremely useful :|

I believe that...If you're into the prisoner selling business, get a mace or sledgehammer or something blunt to knock out people.

Of course you would also need to learn Prisoner Management.

I like using my Lance and bow with two sets of large quivers, but I prefer to use archery over close combat, everyone has their own preferences so whatever suits you is best

i discarded the shield and got myself another bunch of throwing spears (which require skill7) making my character vulnerable to all ranged attacks.

why omg u r asking did i discard the shield?

because usually when i shot my load of throwing weapons, usually there is a) enough of "shield" and b) one slot free ;)

i like to sneak behind the enemy troops lines taking the fire upon me, hiding behind a tree and waiting for the horses to attack my troops, then there are only the archers, i call my cavalry and trample them. when the enemies cavalry returns it is good to have something to knock them out (throwing weapon in the back), especially when they got much armor.

I agree with this, Bow has a good bit of ammo, and if ur any good with it u can get upwards of 20 kills. (Long range Headshots in sieges are very easy being as most of the time the head is the only thing available to shoot.) A shield is useful in an situation, good to protect from ranged attacks when charging, or when u run out of arrows in a siege. Definatly use a One/Two handed sword. they are pretty quick if u have good enough strength, good range, and way better damage than any one hander. I really dont like the lance idea tho, sry. But its only good for one situation. Not very adaptable.

Why not using Two handed/One handed swords+shield+Bow 'n' arrows?

Thats one option, though i would have to give up the lance.

I tend to play horseman with lance, two-handed sword, and a bow with arrows.  I don't like to switch weapons out of my stash much, and I use all three of these regularly depending on the nature of battle.  I don't use a shield (yeah I know, unusual, and dangerous sometimes).  Instead, I use my formation and leading skills to cause bowmen to target others more often than me (immediately issuing Follow Me and spread out commands, and then approaching the enemy obliquely, using terrain obstacles to block their line of fire whenever possible, so that one side of my line comes close to them first and engages, while I wrap the other half of the line into their flank by issuing a charge command at the right time from the right spot, etc.).

The bow is outrageously effective during sieges once you're proficient with it, and keeps me alive until the final assault.  Nothing sucks more than you, the leader, getting so wounded that you have to withdraw.  So I hang out in back and snipe carefully until I'm out of arrows.  I do switch out my lance for a second quiver of arrows during a siege, and often scavenge arrows, and even a crossbow and bolts from the ground/walls once I've expended all of mine.  You can take out 20-30 men easily using a bow if your proficiency is good.  I also use it from horseback in open battles if the enemy lacks a lot of archers, letting the enemy approach my line and thinning them out before engaging them in melee.  I especially like shooting horses out from under men-at-arms and leaders as they slowly approach in a tight formation.

As stated, the two-hand sword (Sword of War) is awesome for the final assault in a siege, and despite the damage penalty for using it one-handed from horseback, I find it fine for the occasions where I get stuck in traffic congestion and can't lance effectively.  If you have your speed up, the speed damage bonus more than makes up for the penalty, and the extra weapon range means you hit a lot more often.  I get immense satisfaction from a well-placed mortal thrust to the face.

I've never been able to get the hang of throwing weapons so I don't use them (just haven't spent enough time with them really; that will be something to enjoy in future games).

I used to swear by your current setup, though I used a jousting lance to take zillions of prisoners. Once you get past that early money-making phase and can afford to just kill everything, ditch the lance entirely. A good, long sword will kill things just as well (though you won't get to see those lovely 3-digit hits anymore) and will serve you quite well both on and off the horse. If you've developed archery, then by all means grab the best bow you can pull and the best arrows you can find. Archery owns face, whether you're picking off siege defenders or making those wonderful parthian shots that swadian knights dread.

The choice between 1h/shield and 2h/extra quiver is up to you. If you're on foot, that shield will likely be indispensable against archers (though a spear would help you against cavalry, tough call). On horseback, the extra reach of a real two-hander can be devastating (especially against other cavalry).

You must use bow. Throwing weapons are fun but the bow is the most powerful weapon in the game. So if you are looking to build a powerful character use bow. IF you really wanna use throwing weapons also use a crossbow for sieges (at least the ones with a siege tower) or you will get bored.

Shields are pretty much useless in this game. Why block attacks and arrows when you can dodge them? Since you like using the lance you can still use it from horseback and use a swinging polearm for sieges. But my personal favorite is 2h sword.

Also don't forget to invest on horse archery skill(6 points) if you plan on using mounted archery.

If you really want the "best" character setup it is 2hs/bow/quiver/quiver. But polearms work too and so does 1h/shield and even throwing weapons, so try anything that feels good.
