What we want to see about the strengthening of the spear?

In ancient wars, the spear was called the king of weapons. The spear can be used to stab or slash, and it is very powerful in either individual combat or formation combat. Individual combat generally uses a short spear similar to a stick, which is operated with two hands and is highly flexible (somewhat like menavlion in the game). In formation battles, spearmen use longer spears and generally can only stab. However, the dense spear phalanx makes it difficult for the enemy to approach, so it has a great advantage on the plain battlefield. But in Bannerlord, the spear seems to be only more effective in resisting the cavalry, and it does not reflect the advantages of the short spear, and the effect that the spear formation should have in the confrontation between the infantry and the infantry is not realized. I believe that many people want to see a powerful spear formation similar to the Viking Conquest. The cost of the spear is low and easy to use. I hope that the recruits generally use spears, like the Valandia and Aserai recruits. Is there more to add?

didnt read op post. i just want cataphracts to use their spears when they charging.

Remember this is in pretty much early stages with low skills and basic spear...Feel free to check out my character achilles adventures if youre more interesting in one handed spear build

We ignore vanilla and play mods. Vanilla weapons will never feel good, they are trying to balance around single- and multiplayer at the same time. It's pure insanity.

I still hope that TW will make the game closer to reality, although it may just be a wish.

My perception of the one-handed spear is that it is less suitable for individual combat than formations. This reminds me of the eastern folk's spear in both hands, which is often referred to as "lance" or "long spear". Maybe in the future the tournament will use different weapons for one-on-one:smile:.

well it depends i guess. But since your are able to hold the enemy at range still being able to hit them you got the upper hand and are more safer controlling situations. + you can stab the enemies behind your front lines to making it a formidable multi weapon of choice. Which is why its also balanced in to this factor

I agree. So the main weapon is the spear, and the sword is the secondary weapon, at least on the battlefield. We all want to strengthen the spear so that the spear is not just used against the cavalry.

i rather prefer an knife to the spear but its up to one each if they want to go heavy or light

It can be hard at first to use the spear, but once you've learnt the footwork required and have a grasp on the aiming and timing, it can be quite a good tool. But at that point, you're so much better off taking the pike unless you're worried about getting peppered by arrows. Something does feel just kind of off and weak about spears in general, though.

In MP on the other hand... It's absolute garbage unless you have some teammates to take the aggro off you.

well thing is if i had a pike in this situation at 2:59 we wouldnt be writing eachother right now  But yeah two handers are lovely weapons to but then you have to be more careful using terrains or allies as cover

Yeah fair, spear and shield does have it's own benefits, but I'd say you were pretty lucky to survive that situation anyway  If I had a pike I'd be much more careful about picking fights like that. To be honest though, I haven't played single player in a fair while, and always just found the pike more successful in multiplayer in terms of damage and obviously range.

Lol tell me about it...my heart was raised to the roof as i tried not to laugh to much (especially with that arrow to the tree and wobbling helmet on top of things) and hense my adrenaline took over to much when i had the chance to fight back xD

Ideally spears could be fixed by changing their damage formula so they won't need to be "charged" to attack and will do damage on contact + their speed and the enemy speed moving against the spear point, this way they would be useful against infantry being the main weapon they should be and terrifying against frontal charges by cavalry that would be mowed down if not heavily armored or attacking from the flanks/rear.

Would also love if weapons had a short forward "jab" attack while shields are raised, this way they could fight in shield wall be it with spears or swords etc and still manage to defend while attacking, this would but greater emphasis on maneuvering, flank/rear attacks etc

To balance it better they could increase a bit axes/polearms bonus against shields so their strategical use would be to break the shieldwall (even better if they had a hook feature were axes up swing would open the guard of a shieldbearer for example kinda like two handed weapons have crush through from their upper swing right now)

Theres already perks for that as they also are strong against shields to begin with. You can bash the shield with your two handed axe like you do with shields to open em up

I've been using spear on foot and on horse for the last couple of characters and they are effective if you know how to use them. But they suffer from some serious issues.
  • Glancing blows do little to no damage even on unarmored/lightly armored opponents.
  • It's difficult to get even close to maximum damage out of them because you have to have momentum and you have to be a full or nearly full extension in the animation.
  • Most decent size 1 handed spears are much slower than even an axe or a mace so blocking them is much easier.
  • You need about 2-3 meters between you and your opponent to get any real damage at all and since most opponents use an axe or sword it's very difficult to maintain that distance because they want to close the gap ie they bum rush you.
  • To hit an opponent using a shield you have to take chances and hit them just before you think their about to start a swing animation or hope you can dodge it and hit as they recover and that requires precise timing.
  • Using them on horse is very strange because against a mounted opponent you actually need to aim at the waist and vs an opponent on foot you have to aim at the knees to waist. It's like the hit boxes are off when riding.
It has a very high skill ceiling which I'm ok with but the damage of using one vs the difficulty of using one is horrible which is why most people dislike them so much. I've tried a few mods that change spears but the problem is they go too far and make using a spear a must. It should be an option not a requirement.

Real battle armor mod fixes spears
I tried this mod, and it is good. But I hope those changes are fundamental to Bannerlord, not to rely on mod. This problem has long existed in Warband. I don't want those that can only exist in mods or DLC:sad:.
