Hey, you can't blame the kid for having grown up in a world like this.
On topic: Install new graphics card drivers. I don't think DirectX has anything to do with it, but you could try getting the latest version of that. Otherwise, check your card out (the hardware) is it clogged up with dust, etc? Clean it up and make sure it's not overheating. Pull out your card and reinsert it. I'm no professional, but that's what I'd do. Plus, if that doesn't work, just back up your important stuff and reinstall Windows. Always seems to do magic, if you can be bothered.
Edit: If it happened only once, and it was fixed after rebooting your PC three times, then I think it was probably overheating. Were you doing anything intense before it happened? (Playing a vid. game or something similar)?
