In the first of its kind in the U.S.K precedent wise, Social workers in the U.S.K are threatening to take away 6 kids from their parents unless they loose weight...

Didn't know social services were now weight watchers... heh

Bit harsh. But if it ensures the kids don't explode into blubbery hamster-sized chunks of fat before they hit puberty then it could be worth it.

Just hope they don't turn into slim killers deprived of the love at home heh...

I can see the logic but yeah seems a bit harsh...

If the government is going to do this, it needs to give the parents guidelines. Yes, it's sad that many parents are completely oblivious as to what constitutes a healthy diet, but I'd rather educate parents than take away their kids. Yes, people can be naturally fat, but it's highly unlikely for a child to be fat unless they are given an unhealthy lifestyle. If social workers were to give the parents healthy and affordable meal ideas, along with guidelines on meal serving sizes, I'm sure things would be fine.

That can't possibly be legal.
Even putting the family in a 'big brother house' is pushing it.

"Don't be ****ing retarded". Regrettably, this instruction often proves far too complex for our current underclass. Though admittedly, perhaps if they'd have followed the original guidelines of getting off your arse and finding a job rather than sponging off the social they'd have been far too busy to have seven kids in the first place.

Or to cut a long story short, if you're going to rely on the state to pay for you and your kids then expect the state to take them off you at the slightest provocation.

Edit: Gosh darn it Rejenerst you said it was in the U.S., I don't know anything about the social services in the UK. I went on believing it was an article about the U.S. because I assumed all people in the UK were slim and trim athletes and only the fatsoes from Hamburgerland have fat children.

Where do you live anyway, on a gambling ship in international waters? Maybe you are like Captain Nemo and live in a big submarine, shunning life on land and its corrupt governments only surfacing to surf the web. I'm kidding.

Er....?

You say this is in the US, but you link to a British website that says nothing about it being in the US, and actually makes a few comments that would lead you to think that it is in the UK (for example, it talks about "council reports", when city councils in the US don't deal with that kind of thing). It also says that it is in a place called "Dundee".

To be fair, most people deny Dundee is part of the UK. Or civilisation for that matter ...

I think people just assumed that it was about the US because it was on the subject of obesity. I'll be honest, I didn't even read the article, but looking at it now, it appears the article is about Dundee, UK, not Dundee, Michigan.

No, you need to separate state intervention in people's lives, and then the basic rights that all people have in a society.
Just because someone receives welfare or other services (although I don't see it mentioned in the article),
it doesn't mean those people can be stripped of their basic rights.

That's what turns me on about you Mage... your attention to detail.
Sorry my mistake have fixed it in the OP.

I think the social welfare system of the UK is great, but at least in terms of number many people exploit it AFAIK and that's ****ty IMO.

Even if it wasn't for the fact that it's the Daily Mail, and therefore about as balanced, non-biased and committed to the truth as Godfrey, I still wouldn't buy this story. As always there's more to this than reported, it's just media dramatizing tripe. Social workers don't get their jollies off forcing children out of their homes.

Though I do find it interesting how enraged people are about the government removing children from their parents custody. Morbid Obesity, especially starting that young, is more than equal to any other form of child neglect. They'll have more health problems than your average drug addict by the time they're twenty, yet it's somehow different to when social workers intervene for families giving their kids alcohol, cigarettes or living in a house so messy it gives them lung infections, which no one seems to complain about.

Don't get me wrong, it feels off to me too, but logically I know it shouldn't be. I suppose it's a matter of being desensitized to it, because it's 'normal'.

I reckon letting your kids get morbidly obese is child cruelty unless there's like an underlying health reason.

I hope this is real and they start shipping kids to state run fat camps.
