So I stop off at the tavern in the one city I control - Dhirim - to buy everyone a drink, you know, to show the town how generous I am. Suddenly I get ganked by a hired assassin? That's new. Fortunately I survived (barely) -  I wonder what would happen if he beat me?

There are two headings for Belligerent drunk, one for the actual drunk and one for a Hired Assassin pretending to be a drunk. Same sort of thing as running into bandits in a town at night, the script says just bandits or maybe payed by someone out to kill you. Just adds spice to the role playing part of the game.

I had always assumed the belligerent drunk was a hired assassin, but maybe I was just being paranoid

You can pull the, "Do you know who I am,"  and he'll back off.  So, I wouldn't consider him an assassin.

Funny thing is when you get challenged by him those 'supposed' hardnut badass hired blades run for the ladies loo only to tell you afterwards they are the toughest hombres around

Even better, one time my forces had just lost a battle and I was captured. I walked into a tavern and most of my companions were standing there. Now I had fully decked these guys out, all 52+ armor with a 2 hander or a sowrd and shield. Then some guy wearing that tupid hat draws a sword on me and they all run.

thats something i didnt hear before, hired assasin as drunk dude
i do know the bandits that might be hired to kill you but this not

ps: would be great if that hired to kill would get worked out better,
trying to find out who attempted to get you killed and so

This is not new at all though.
the higher level belligerent drunk has been internally named hired assassin since 1.110 or longer
another half-finished idea probably

Maybe its because you didn't pay them to help you.

Agreed. I think, in fact, the innkeeper says something about how the assassin's employer might actually be in town at that moment, but after asking around (guards, guildmaster, townspeople, lords and ladies in the castle), there's no dialogue option to inquire about it. Unless i'm missing something.

As for you two pantalones inteligentes, it's great you're both very clever, but it's new to those of us who prefer to just play the game rather than mucking around under its hood

You mean not everyone likes to muck around under the hood?

If you got ganked by a hired assassin, it goes to a menu where apparently the tavernkeeper stopped running and hit him, after which he runs away.
Anyways, lords who dislike you might send an assassin every 7 days, if he's in the town.

I thought those hired thugs/assassins were just random events? You're saying that other lords send them after you?? That would be a totally different scenario. Then you should be able to confront that lord about it if you managed to catch one of the assassins alive! Challenge him to a duel over it or rat him out to your king or something.

There were variables which stored which lord sent them and where it happened, which could've led to quests, but those were taken out of the game. For now.

lol wut

It'd be cool if the mercenaries stood in place and cheered as opposed to their current run around like a girl script. Companions could be done on a case by case basis, I guess (some of them are girly girls). Beyond that, everyone else can run around ape****. What I would really like to see is an optional reward from the barkeep for knocking him out as opposed to killing him outright (and/or honor boost).

At higher levels I think it would be cooler if the drunk sauntered off at your obvious power/badassedness, only to ambush you in the alley with his buddies as soon as you try to leave, so the event scales somewhat with your progress.
