The epic department ultra noob build* has the large war cleaver in it somewhere because it does the most damage. Other than that there really isnt a concensus. Speed/reach is way more important than damage in most cases, and the extent to whch you want speed or reach determines the subjectivity.

It depends if you intend to play multiplayer or singleplayer with this weapon.
If singleplayer, just take whatever you want or works best for you or as jacob mentioned the epic department ultra noob build is often an okay place to start.
If multiplayer then it is decreed by the "epicer department of ultra pro mlgxDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!1111!1 tumor" players that you must take anything two handed, failing that, take a polearm like a great long bardiche, glaive or war spear. Take no armour for the speed bonus and place the icing ontop of the horrific asthetic of your character by intentionally making your characters face as horrifically twisted and contorted as possible, just incase the person you kill doesn't get the message that you are an absolute toxic waste of a player slot.
Then join a server & spin2win.

It feels more medievaly swordman like than going at it with a cleaver.

one of the main reasons I've never used that sword. It looks like a rare kitchen implement and it probably never existed in real life.

I'm pretty sure it actually did exist. I just don't know the exact weapon it was based off of, though.
There are medieval drawings of it in the "Maciejowski Bible" but nobody's found any archaeological evidence so far. It looks really weird and it appears alongside other bizzare and stylised medieval depictions, like the infamous "banded mail". There's also the fact that it depicts stories from the bible and the artist takes a lot of artistic liberties.
Yeah I wouldn't put much stock into the accuracy of the maciejowski depictions of anything. But those great helmets do look rather smashing, and I believe we have the macie bible to thank for the shortened military scythe as well (not to mention cutting through mail and helmets!jacobhinds 说:

Long arming sword, highest damage of the straight bladed swords that can stab, longest 1h along with a sarranid sword (that has much less damage), decent speed. Great from horseback and when you can move around.
