What does the number behind the shortages actually mean?

I never understood them. Seemed to me to be something like a unit category or something only useful for the game engine.
Does someone know any better?

Greetings

My guess was that telling you what they were short in lets you know what would make a profit.

But I am not sure what the numbers represent - they aren't the numbers in the items_kind file, nor are they probably some sort of unadulterated value of the items (since Oil would be more valuable than Smoked Fish as a result). And it can't be that the values are more expensive the smaller they are, since Smoked Fish and Dried meat are at opposite ends of the spectrum yet cost around the same.

so far i saw, every goods you sell in the town, it represent 15 whatever, lets say kilogramm,  shortage of 1414 smoked fish,  u sell 2 fishes to town, town have a shortage of 1384 kilogramm... so u have to bring 95 fishes to the town.... i didnt tested to the end... just tested with fish and wool clothes  each 15 times...

Yeah, gave up on testing it out since it doesn't seem to be worth the effort. But I noticed the 15 units less as well. I sold goods with a weight of 30 ... probably lbs so kilo as you said would make sense somehow. Haven't even checked it for 50 lbs goods so to speak.
In the end even if you know this town has a shortage of 1000 kilo grain it tells you nothing. You can have much better prices next town with no shortage in that case at all. That all doesn't make much sense to me. Anyway...

The sad part is I don't know either

I didn't really play much around with the economy part, I'm much more interested in the combat.
