what do all the colors mean when tracking?

it basically means how hot your tracks are. this way you can know who passed when just by looking at them.

I would not say "bright", I'd say "red".

When its red its fresh, when its pale its old.

If you only have tracking level 1 all tracks are white/gray.

So, as other people said, the colour is only to indicate how fresh/hot they are : )

Basically. I was searching for the right words... and I figured tracks aren't literally 'hot', so I didn't to use that, though hot and cold are a perfect way to put it abstractly and still have it make sense to most. Color saturation might be what I should have said, but meh...

tracks turn blue when they're more than 5-6 hours. Turn gray at about 8-9 hours.

Who are you trying to track down?If the game modeled map travel to be way slower then I could imagine it would be in best interest to follow tracks.Otherwise just go off in any direction and youll hot someone.Am I missing something here?

If you come across several tracks pointing towards your own kingdom you could assume that it is an enemy campaign, this way you can track them down and either assemble an army to beat them, or fight on the walls of the castle/city they are trying to take.

Its also usefull when hunting bandits, when you are in an area where you know there should be sea raiders and you see a track showing a partysize of less then 50 and more then 20 you could be pretty sure that this is a sea raider party, so you track it down with ease.

Tracking save time, but it is not a must to have.

I get Deshavi (or whatever her name is) since I always pick her, she have tracking 2, I don't feel that I need better tracking then that.

Of course, tracks give more information the higher skill you have. I have never had tracking at 10 but I guess the tracks would last longer and be much more informative showing what faction it is, and perhaps even what lord it it.

But then again, I might be wrong since I have never tried it out myself : )

I have Deshavi with tracking at 9. Basically, at that level it tells you whether the party is a caravan, peasants, war party, or some kind of bandits or deserters. But it doesn't tell faction. And I guess it's also more accurate about the number of people in the party. Though I think it should also tell the number of footmen and horses, but that's up to the devs.
