What did I do wrong here?

So I decided to join a faction. I joined the red guys as I liked the location of their assets and plan to eventually make it my own. I spoke to the king and was hired as a merc.

I merged with their army and helped to defend some allies that were trying to siege a city from the northern empire. After that they seemed to disband then reform in their own territory and just patrolled the area.

I checked the army status and we are still at war with north empire. So I decided to go raid a north empire village on the front lines to try help my allies out. As soon as I did this my merc status was removed and when I try to rejoin them it says I can't because of negative reputation.

Why would it give me negative reputation if I am taking over a town they are at war with? Are there any other factors I'm missing here?

Are you sure the war wasn't peaced in the meantime? Game has a tendency to not give me a notification when a peace happens.

Just go into the Encyclopedia (N), go into Kingdoms and look for Vlandia (I'm assuming you're with Vlanda) scroll down and see if they're at war with the Northern Empire still.

And/or reload a previous save.

Yes I checked right before I attacked the village and they were still at war. It gave me loads of negative reputation with a bunch of different people. I guess I'll just reload the save before and not attack the village.

This has happened in every single one of my playthroughs, a minor faction will be at war, peace, but the diplomacy screen won't update. I'd follow the AI more than the diplomacy screen in regards to who is fighting what war
