What determines being deemed "controversial" by other lords?

Someone mentioned being named Marshall leads to being labelled controversial, and thus lords are less likely to support you in your bid for fiefs, does anyone know how this happens, and how long I have to wait before it "wears off".

from experience i can say

-villagers that are attacked/captured
-lords (allies) that have been attacked
-rallying the troops (lords) and failing at capturing something
-a fief that has been looted
-last but not least a castle that has been occupied by the enemy

getting controversy down
-helping an ally in a battle
-reinforcing a castle while in siege (-3 to controversy)
-other than that WAITING

thats it, hoped it helped

Yea, what are the good sides for being a marshal?
Uh, well other than the fact that I destroyed the khergits in a single campaign because I had command of a huge army...nothing.  Only problem is if you have too much controversy you don't get fiefs assigned to you.  I think asking for fiefs a lot also raises your controversy while supporting other lords has the opposite effect.  Not sure though.  May have just been because my campaign lasted a ridiculous amount of time.  (I wouldn't let the lords leave until all of the khergit lands were conquered).

Your character gets an ego boost. 'Dude, I'm like actually in charge of ****!'

Maybe it can make you feel better making the other lords your *****es...

In all seriousness, if I'm marshall I use my influence to make my faction incredibly ineffective at warcraft, because I plan on ditching them anyways and making my own faction..... "Come on guys, I command half our nations martial might right now, lets go hunt down those pesky bandits!" Or how about assembling the army in some forgotton castle and just leaving them to wait for a new order. Maybe getting the lords to follow you one by one and leading them into some ****ty battles and just leaving them screwed over....

Damn, I'm a **** marshall

LMFAO, nice.  Bound and determined to be just as ineffective as the NPC marshals aren't you.

OMG, you're Machiavelli (sp?) reincarnation
As for me, being Marshall is honourable responsibility. I'm roleplay always. So if I'm Swadian count, I'll be a good one. If Khergit, don't know, didn't try yet.

Well, when you serve a prick king, what's the point of worthy service to an unworthy liege? It's the feudal system I'm following: I feel that my liege is letting his responsibilities to me take a backseat, so I am simply fulfilling my obligations in a similar manner. If a NPC lord could ask to 'Speak with me in private' and ask 'How do you feel about King Harlus' my answer would be "King Harlus? That bastard? Yeah, he's a real ******".

But really, I only become a vassal to get my own banner (I prefer to start as commoner) and a legitimate reason to **** with lord sized parties. I always plan to be my own boss, eventually. I hate Nobles.......me and Brunduk are good drinking buddies... That's why I love Collect debt or taxes quests....I take them from some lord I never plan to deal with for a very, very long time, and never pay the cash back, and quest never expires, so no companions get their panties in a bind about failed quest. Technically I call this a loan.... I dunno, guess I like to roleplay a jackass to the nobles, the hero of the people, and a ladies' man (got 2 GF's, one of which is betrothed...can't wait to kick that dude's ass when he finds out and gets pissed, and am working on getting third).

Oh another reason to become Marshall: You never need permission to marry any noble lady, even if the father hates your guts. Just marshall the army, take them down to your GF's place, and march right in and tell that goatfaced sonofa***** that you are going to marry his daughter whether he likes it or not. 800 armed men have remarkable persuasion skill as a whole... 'Oh and how about a 10,000 denar dowry the seal the arrangement?' Damn, if only you could do that....

But yeah *raises tankard* 'Here's to the doom of all highborn lords' (I kinda like the ladies, seeing as they are the only possible choice for lifelong soulmate).

I typically take Marshal, start a campaign, take a keep or maybe a city, loot a bunch of villages, then go to the king and resign the position. He'll offer it to you again in all likelyhood and you avoid getting controversy when the enemy razes one of your villages.

Actually in my last game I've given up being Marshal altogether as I've found that whenever I'm Marshal our forces never garrison keeps/towns after taking them. And thanks to the take-stand-on-issue bug introduced with 1.105 I also avoid taking locations on my own as I find it hard to play through all the red text spam.

Can you actually elope with more than 1 lady? And if you elope, does her family become yours?

Well, er...I havn't married anyone yet. My character prefers to sneak the ladies out for a moonlit ride through the countryside.....
Well, I imagine he would anyways....
