What cable do I need?

Just moved into my new house and my room has what looks like an ethernet port, but upon closer inspection appears to be an ADSL port. I have no knowlage whatsoever on network hardware so does anyone know what cable(s) i'll need to hook it up to my PC?

Standard phone cable and a filter. In fact one of these will work:

Then you hook up your modem to one line and phone to the other.

Yeah thanks Ive got one of them, so i buy another modem then ethernet from that to my PC?

No a regular modem will work, the regular modem should take a standard phone line in then Ethernet out. You may need a router.

Went to pick up a modem today (I dont have one, the wireless one is downstairs) and they looked to be around £30 minimum. Now I really know nothing about networking i dont know how ive made it this far, but will I definitely need an ADSL>Modem>ethernet setup to get this working?

EDIT: i found a 'virgin media super hub' in the cellar, would this do?

Did you know that if your house already has an router/modem that's connected to the phoneline downstairs, you cannot place another one on the same line? Meaning that you need to suffer the wireless connection OR get a repeater that improves the signal OR run an Ethernet cable from your PC down the stairs to the router/modem.

All the big ISP's customize their routers/modems before sending them to the customer, so unless you're using Virgin as your ISP, it won't work.

No I didn't thanks. Well... ethernet that far is out of the question unfortunately. I guess Ill see if the housemates are okay with me moving it to the first floor, otherwise online gaming might be a bit hard.
