What affects party movement speed?

Clearly the horse that I ride is a factor; but what else? I've picked up bits and pieces but nothing definative. And it seems to me that I have been overtaken by groups that were all afoot; what's up with that? What things do I need to know or compensate for in order to make sure my parties speed is all it can be?

Keeping spare (fast) horses in inventory; what's the coorelation here?

Having a percentage of your troops be mounted; how many is enough?

Putting the rent-a-heroes on horseback as well?

Finally, what's a good speed to shoot for; how much speed is enough?

Riding skill if you or your heroes are mounted, athletics skill if not. Pack horses in your inventory decrease the penalty of cargo you're carrying. I.e. if you have a ton of salt with you you'll go slower, but having a few sumpter horses will lessen the burden. You'll still go slower, though, and they won't have any effect if you're not moving heavy cargo. The type of troops you have with you affects it: high-level foot troops are faster than peasants, top-tier mounted units are the fastest. The horse you're riding does NOT affect map speed. The party speed is determined based on the average speed and the speed of the slowest unit. Average speed / (Average speed / Slowest speed) = Party speed, or something like that.

A reasonable movement speed for a foot party or mixed infantry/cavalry party is between 7 and 9, but you might not be able to chase down the fastest units that way. An all-mounted, high-level party can go around at speeds well over 10.
