...What about environmental/circumstantial combat effects?

I know this would probably be a little too much to be easily coded in, far more so than some of the other interesting suggestions, but what about the ability to alter the environment you are fighting on? I'm not suggesting digging up the ground and make trenches, or even cutting down trees, but things like

-throwing greek fire to have burning patches of land
-placing simple traps (like a bear trap) that deals damage once, or perhaps cripples horses instantly
-smoke effects to block archers

Though I'm not exactly sure about the last one (I'm not awares if you use a LoS statement, or whether it's just a check versus maximum archery distance), I think they would definately add something to the game!

Well, for now, it will not be that useful... you have VERY little control over your men.
I hope that Armadan will implement ideas about that (including mine).
If he will, this game will beat three kinds of crap out of Rome:Total War .

Greek fire and Beartrap's would be awsome.

Especially if beartrap's cut peoples legs off and you could watch them screaming on the ground bleeding to death.

Oh, I read the title and I thought it was going to be something like weather affecting troop morale and such.
Traps and the like don't seem that useful anyway.

Well, if things like sieges and assaults were ever a part of the game then these things would be viable...otherwise it's just naah...

actually i think traps are not that bad, if you plce one right in front of you so enemy comes and you just laugh at him... and he dies
