Were Longbows only used by the English?

Yeah, they've found longbows in ancient gravesites. Nobody really knows why England has so many longbows in the 15th century, their best guess is an archery craze just went through the nation, creating lots of tournaments and such. Short bows were much, much more common due to not needing a massive amount of strength to use them like a longbow does.

yea, longbows were widespread throughout Europe but, because of the laws issued in England that virtually made archery compulsory for everyone who wasn't a man-at-arms or a knight, the draw weight of the English bows increased an incredible amount over the rest of Europe.

You guys are all stupid. The longbow is English only, and only comes around after you build like the 3rd tier Archery Range.

Forgive me, I meant the Welsh invented what is known as the English Longbow.

Considering as the "English Longbow" is a relatively simple standard D shaped self bow, how can the welsh be said to have invented it?

They made extensive use of it but the longbow has been around forever, with a couple of minor changes to suit the climates they were used in.

Thats what I mean, they invented what the English used themselves. The English Longbow is quite different from the standard.

Not really. Everything that makes the "English" longbow special are quite ordinary things.

1) its over 68"s long, which is typically where bows become longbows.
2) Its made from a self yew stave, also very common.
3) its D-cross sections, also extremely common.

All of these things are as old as the stone age.

Besides, everyone knows that the Holmgaard design is vastly more interesting.

Personally, I couldn't see much difference between Otzi the ice man's longbow and a more recent longbow, but whatever floats your boat.

Well, Sushiman...
The English only used the respectful gentlemanly longbows, the longbows everyone else used were crap and ungentlemanly

The difference between Longbows and English Longbows, was that English Archers wheren't drunk like the Irish, Looting and Raping like the Danes, or being anally molested by everyone and their grandmother in central Europe, allowing for them to make it an artform and not simply a fire and hope to god you get close.

Well the only difference between longbow and English longbow is that English longbow was used by people who newer learned how to make a crossbow ;)
