Apologies for the several hours of downtime for the forums, a database related file somehow became locked among other problems, and the server would not properly reboot, but it appears everything is back up and working now. We're still not sure what caused the problem to begin with (I'm about to look into it), but hopefully it won't happen again.

No problem.
Haven't noticed any lag here so far.

I've checked back through the logs and can't spot anything useful to indicate what caused the problem; I see in the logs where MySQL repaired the tables itself during the successful reboot and it didn't indicate any file access problems. All of the basic hardware checking on startup was clear of problems as well. The Apache2 error logs likewise have nothing useful in them as far as I can see.
So, I guess I'll just see about backing up the database more frequently in case there is a worse problem in the future.

EDIT: and you may have experienced a bit of lag just now as the database was being backed up. I'm about to sample another backup method, so it might lag for a minute or two again when I do that.

I'm about to restart Apache in a few minutes to implement a small setting change, so the forums could go down briefly. It'll probably be for only a split second, but fair warning.

I don't think the forums have gone down from the release of a new version since we switched from PHPBB to SMF.

Just got word that these server problems were due to power failure along with power fluctuations where the server is located. There were rather bad storms at the time, and for some reason two of the data center's three backup generators failed to work properly. It should therefore be an isolated incident.
So, root cause of the problem identified, and it actually turned out to be along the lines of what I first suspected (power related).

Damn, and I was thinking one of two reasons:
1. Collective weight of Dream Women + spam turned the forums internet brain crazy/perverted
2.New update.
