Weapon Reach and Speed Issues

I couldn't find any mention of this.. soo...

Is anyone else having a problem with the way weapon reach works? Because I'm noticing some really ridiculous stuff that, to be honest, is starting to piss me off.

For example.. I was fighting a Dark Knight on foot.. me with a longsword and him with a mace. I have better reach. Neither of us are moving. I back up.. and swing. I'm too far away.. I miss. Neither of us moves.. he swings and hits.

What? If I have better reach.. and can't hit him.. how exactly is he hitting me with a weapon with less reach?

This also happened against a river pirate today.. I was mounted with a lance.. couched.. charging a river pirate who hit my horse with a CLUB before my LANCE could hit him.................... again -- what?!

Also swing speed seems to be wonky. The Sea Pirate is swinging his two-handed axe faster than I'm swinging my balanced longsword with 24 Agility. That doesn't seem right.

Anyone else noticing any of that.. or is it just me?

I've noticed the swing speeds being a bit odd more than anything, not too sure about the reach but there are things like your armor which can slow you down...

Anyway can't say for sure (especially do to the fact my character is kinda low level)Worth mentioning though.

Newbie,

You and your troops automatically eat the food that is in your food slot on your inentory display.

If you could, try not to post questions like this in a thread that obviously discribes something totally unrelated. If you cannot find a thread that matches your topic/question ... create a new one.

Thanks.

EDIT: No problem.

*On Topic*

I have (during rare moments) thought the same thing, but just figured it was just me and not actually an issue.

If you are having it also, Damien ... maybe it wasn't my imagination after all.

About the river pirat hitting your horse before you hit him, it also happened to me.. the thing is, now they can hit horses in the head (pretty sure you couldn't in 632), so they hit the horse before you get in range..

About speed, I'm 200% sure that enemies swing their weapons faster than they should..

I have also been noticing weapon range issues.... My staff, which has 140 reach, is only BARELY longer ranged than a longsword, with 100 reach. This leads to the extremely annoying situation where I swing, miss, let the enemy move a tiny bit closer, and then get hit by his longsword

Yes most of the same problems.
And is it just me, but when your sword clips through thier torso, it kills the horse instead of them.
Then they come around and whack your horse and manage to kill it while doing fourty damage to you?

It seems it's only the Dark Riders who have this amazing feat of what I just described.

That and I guess my Charger only has 29 health because it tends to die after they hit it for that for the first time on the battlefield.
Anywher else and it's practicly invinceble.

I have noticed something very strange about weapon damage on Horses, it seems as if where you hit the horse has an effect on how long befor it falls or becomes crippled because sometimes my hunter will take like 25 damage and fall dow and be crippled and other times it will take around 70 or so before it falls(like before .7) and not be crippled at all.

I'm not sure if this is because of the horse getting hit is a specific place or just some wierd bug

I think that horses heal as players do. So if it isn't fully healed before the battle it can come down with minimal damage.

Yeah, I noticed that too... say, if your horse is knocked out or w/e during a fight (not crippled or killed, but knocked out) it comes back in to the battle with less health.

We need a horse health display thingy!

and PIE!

At least now I know it wasn't my imagination playing tricks on me.

Everything seems to be in order. When they can hit you from horseback and you can't with a longer weapon, he probably leaned off his horse to deliverr it.

The only thing that I can think of when you dont hit with a seemingly superior weapon is that your skill is just low and you miss. This is not a fact, but a mere thought.

There are clipping issues at very close range. Arrows miss point blank frequently and I wonder if this occasionally happens to melee weapons too?

Okay, so I'm not the only one noticing that reach and speed are sometimes really wonky. Good. I hate being the only one having a problem with something.

And I still say there's no satisfactory explanation for how a river pirate, on foot, with a club, managed to hit my horse -before- my uber-lance hit -him-. I mean... it's a giganto lance.. it sticks out in front of my horse for at least the equivalent of two or three feet..

The only thing that I can think of when you dont hit with a seemingly superior weapon is that your skill is just low and you miss.

That might be true of the problems encountered at lower levels.. but I doubt a 25th or 40th level character should be having that problem against river pirates.

Well, I find weapon reach to be a bit on the poor side in the game. There isn't that much of a great difference between weapons when it comes to length. Spears are hardly THAT much longer than a sword, and there's virtually no difference between a compact mace and a two-handed sword. Only a couple of centimeters ingame-wise at most.

Yeah I think someone should make a mod that increases the differences between weapons, maybe with a multiplier. Or maybe this is something which should be in the final version.... Considering the AI has a MUCH better "feel" for the reach of weapons, it really doesn't make much sense, IMO, for the weapon ranges to be so similar.

I posted a suggestion fairly recently that weapons which have long reach, and are designed to take advantage of it, should get some kind of inherent benefit. Basically, I was saying that spears and other polearms should have the ability to keep the enemy at the end of their reach, as long as they keep hitting the enemy, and as long as the enemy keeps failing some kind of test. This way you don't have to worry about "backpedaling" to try and keep your enemy in between that "magic sweet spot" where you have the advantage. Of course, if your skill in polearms is not significantly greater than your enemy's weapon skill, you probably shouldn't be successful at this maneuvre anyway. And, once your opponent slips past your reach, you are going to want to backpedal a few steps to try and get him/her back at the end of the weapon again.

Another idea I just thought of -- to counter this, and for logical reasons -- is that a thrusting attack from any weapon above a certain length (anything past a dagger, basically) should always do zero damage when you are too close to the enemy. Only thrusting attacks, though.

=$= Big J Money =$=

PS - Hey Damien, since you use the term wonky, I need to ask you, are you British? For some reason I'm thinking that's a Brit term.
