...arrows do i need to kill one enemy? i hate it to see one low lvl npc with 4 or 5 arrows in his body running across the battlefield.

currently i play the barren lands mod but i like the setting of this mod. what i really love in the BL mod is that it is possible to kill raider with one jarid.. if you hit him correctly and i am not talking about headshots. you can also get killed with one good hit, this way you always feel the danger of beeing knocked out by one hit.
you can no longer slaughter 20 raiders alone while standing in the middle of them swinging you two-handed axe.

Balance, balance. There were too many uber weapons that did not fit the time period.

As for guys getting 5+ arrows and still being able to run, it is historically attested that in the Crusades heavy mail worn under a coat made many knights almost impervious to Turkish and Saracen arrows.

However there is still a selection of powerful weapons in the game. The Great Axe and Sword are still in, together with the warbow. There's also Gram, the most uber one handed weapon you can ever lay your hands upon.

Don't expect to take enemies down with an Arming Sword in just a single strike without a decent amount of skill, though. In other words, practice heavily or just be patient.

I've also noticed my strikes being far less dead than they used to be, particularly against mail-clad opponents. It's sort of irritating, but I like armour actually being worth something. Plus, it means strikes against -my- mail are also blunted, so the field is just as even as it was before.

Perhaps ranged weapons should be more powerful, but deal cut, not pierce damage-- armor is still very useful against ranged weapons, but you'll have fewer peasants running around with 5 arrows in them.

this is a good idea, especially for broad head arrows.

More specifically, crossbows still deal piercing damage while bows deal cutting damage. This is to represent the superior armour piercing capabilities of a crossbow vs. any bow.

eh, not necessarily true. The truly revolutionizing aspect of the crossbow is that it didn't take a whole lot of training to use. Crossbows didn't become incredibly more powerful than bows until crossbows with crankshafts came along to assist in drawing stronger bows.

Any crossbow has innate properties which can translate into superior armour piercing capabilities. First, the bolt with iron tip is much smaller, and therefore loses speeds at lower rates than arrows. Then we have the fact that the draw of even a light weight crossbow is much stronger than the tensile strenght and draw of most bows, including the bigger ones, resulting not only in better speeds but also better range and more joules of force at the hitting stage, therefore a far better chance at piercing armor. The crank and the mamooth arbalests and steel crossbows of later were not much revolutionary in this aspect, being merely improvements over the original design; the crank was specifically designed for crossbows so heavy that plain manual reloading became impossible, but also with greater tensile strenght. It is not a special thing for itself alone.

Tests conducted with mail armour were especially revealing about this: accurate replicas of an 11th century hauberk and padding were capable of absorbing arrows even from composite bows without much problem, whereas they fared poorly vs. medium sized crossbows.
