Scimitars were introduced in Middle East before the 10th century, perhaps since the 8th century by persian influences but it is difficult to know exactly. Besides, Arab world is large, it depends of the regions. By the time of the Prophet Muhammad, Arabs used only straight swords, called "Bedouin sword". When Turks arrived in Middle East, curved sword were more and more common, all the more as Turks started to occupy the main place in armies. Since the 11th century, Arabs were a minority in Middle eastern Islamic armies, consequently sabers were quite widespread, perhaps prevalent. But the more prestigious weapon was still the straight sword, as the Prophet only used it. So khalifs and kings had straight swords. In the Islamic West, things were quite differents. Turks almost never been there. All swords were straight, and North African/Andalusian Arabs and Berbers only used these straight swords until the late 15th century, when curved blade were introduced.
The fact that sabers were introduced in the Middle East in the early Middle Age doesn't necessarily mean that they were more common than straight swords by the middle of the 12th century
