The crossbow used by the spanish in 1500 was pretty identical to the one used in the middle ages. The only changes would have been the a slight increase in size. Do we have plans to put matchlocks into the game?

I am afraid I wont be able to start modelling the jaguar suit for some time, will be very busy this coming 3 weeks

maybe will model some small things like some 2 weapons I have close to finish and some prop pottery

so I will be silent for some long time but will keep posting so you dont think I am gone

will post about whatever relevant info I have found for the mod

and talking about info

aztecs army was technically whole light infantry but sure you knew that
aparently the tzizimtl suit, the skull one,was weared by people in comanding positions mostly
aparently high nobles went in battle whit simpler headress like this one show in this drawing of nezahualcoyotl
421px-Nezahualcoyotl.jpg

that was a wooden skullcap whit "ears" of materials like feathers or imitating the ears of a animal if the person had some animal name in his
also you can see theyr suits where more brightly decorated than the simple cotton jacket
though I dont know if others groups used the same kind of suit since nezahualcoyotl was a enemy of the aztec, but it would be possible, what is true is that it was normal to wear feathered clothing not just for the nigher rank, but most of the grunts probably used less decorated equipment

priest participated in combat promiently too, various of the drawings of the osprey books that show mesoamerican warriors shows proest whit more decorations and headresses so maybe we can add the priest to use headresses in varios shapes too.like maybe of the gods or things like that,I dont know if the priest did anything diferent in combat besides making ceremonies, but we can add some more extravagant outfits for them for fun and if someone wants to wear a more diferent look

EDIt: some info that may be of interest regarding buildings

you probably know the big disk called the aztec sun stone, the famous one that is a calendar too
it measures 3,60 meters wide and it probably was placed in the ground and was used for a aztec gladiatorial combat where  a prisioner was tied in the leg to the ground and battled elite warriors until couldnt fight no more and was sacrificed at the spot, but is more probably that it was just placed over a temple in a horizontal way as shown in some temple miniatures cuz the stone disk used for gladiatorial combat had a hole in the middle

here is a reconstuccion whit the possible original coloration
800px-Sonnenstein_Rekonstruktion.jpg

I think it will easy to implement since it would require litle modelling and we can use a photo and simple coloring in photoshop, also cuz is the msot famous piece of the aztecs

this is a image of a gladiatorial altar I mentioned before
temalacatl.jpg

another similiar monolith is this one called the coyoxauihtl monolith, which despict the moon goddes dismenbered acorring to the myth of huizilopotchli the aztec lord god who was her brother and killed her together whit other 400 brothers which turned into the star and coyoxauqhi intot he moon
594px-Coyolx%C4%81uhqui.jpg

this one is a bit bigger and was found at the front of the templo mayor infront of the stairs that lead to huitzilopochi section, since the temple had 2 sections at top
it probably that it was used to hold the dismenbered body parts of the sacrificed in the respective places, also you can note that it used a similiar coloration which seemed to the be the standard for aztec constructions

the other one is a even bigger monolith that was discovered in 2006 and it depicts the earth goddes tlatelcuthli wihc was the earth goddes and represented burial and rebirth, aztec gods where kinda like "dual" for example a god that gives life is also one that can give dead,or the feathered serpent quetzalcoatl which is a serpent that flys and is the god of wind
Tlaltecuhtli.jpg

d-48f317.jpg

this one was discovered near templo mayor but I am not sure where, its probably that it served as lid to the tomb of ahuitzol who was the king that reigned before moctezumaII,though I am not very sure if it was buried at the time of the conquest since aztec used to build over old buildings to make new bigger ones but it was probably unburied
is probably the missing central piece had a image of the ruler

this monoliths can be easy to model and would look very good whit the other buildings

another sculptures of importance
this one of the mother goddes cualictcue,it aparently was near the coyoxauqui disk
450px-Monolito_de_Coatlicue.JPG

this one is called chacmool,it was used to hold offerings or human hearts,it was very popular in all mesoamerica and can be found almost in every big city, this iamge is form one in el templo mayor
800px-Chac_mool.jpg

there was also other smaller animal shaped vessel to hold human heart from the sacrifices

later I will post a bit more buildings when I get more info on that

Keep it up guys.

Do we have plans to put matchlocks into the game?

Um i believe i have already did that. i have a couple, but plan on more.
this mod is coming together and to my great pleasure i announce that there are 3 days until the release of the Alpha version
Viel Glueck! (Good Luck) and keep this coming!
Sadly, i have not been able to get the map for the alpha, and the alpha version will be the vanilla map with only minor name changes....
BUT HEY! its only the first release, and expect a fully fledged map with all name changes, a completely redone map, etc etc etc!

Keep it up!
-Ajolin-

thats amazing news  and as to RJMC's post yes all aztec troops were "light infantry" in the sense that they didnt have much by way of armor, but do not underestimate their cotton armor. It worked amazingly at stoping arrows, slints, slashing attacks, etc. but obviously couldnt stand up to piercing attacks from spanish rapiers. There are even accounts of Spaniards using their armor over the leather armor that was around in Europe (they didn't all have steel breastplates) because cotton kept you cooler in the tropics and deserts of mesoamerica.

Well its almost May 20th!
I just realized May 20th is also the release date for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. take note this was NOT intended
im having my team send to me what they've got, ill put it all together, run some quick tests, and if its good, ill release it on MBRepository for you fair Fans to finally enjoy!
Also take note this is just the ALpha release: not too too many changes made. we still need to edit some scenes, get new buildings, and other things like that.

Looking forward to release,
Ajolin

Edit: Due to Difficulties i have been forced to push back the release date at least 3 days. sorry for any inconvenience.

a litle update

made this 2 new weapons,a more crappy bathered looking maquahitl based on varios despictions though I dont know if are acurate, where it show it whit big flakes of obsidian and the wood was like a stick

also a wooden sword, also show in some codices but not sure if it the images are of maquahutil whtiout blades but still I made it since its possible the aztec would have used it,the macana which is how this weapon was called was used mostly by less "developed" tribes of places like the caribean or the amazon so maybe we can add it to be used by hostile tribes or something like that

I have been reading my book of the conquest recently and some things to note

we have skipped the fact that mocthezuma received cortes as some repesentant of quetzalcoatl and bot hade diplomatic talking and such, evenmocthezuma invited at thery palace and let them settle in other which the spaniard used to fortify in case of a attack, also cortes himself took a look at the inside of the 2 temples a top the big piramid and called the idols "demons" in front of everyone and even taking some pieces of gold, but since I guess m&b dont support such kind of diplomatic mode then we will just let the player paly as they want
also it seems the inside of the temples where covered in blood like a slaughterhouse and smelled worse according to spanish sources, the idols where bathed in blood, the humans hearts where burned in especial bowls or feed to animals of the emperor,a litle note to take when I make the buildings
and the animals they had where from birds to jaguar and coyotes and rattlesnakes

also there is the fact that the victory of the spaniards was technically thanks to the alliances whit the disident groups, like the tlaxcala who helped inmenselly and where very combat efficient themselfs, and where in very large numbers too,and though the groups that joined the spanish werent pleased whit them for the destruction of theyr idols and such, they found them as the lesser of both evils so they joined them, aparently there is still some despise to the tlaxcaltecs in mexico today due to it and the tlaxcaltecs still defends themselfs due tot he abusses of the mexicans

also the mexicans didnt conquered all of tlaxcala cuz they used them as training in ther flower wars

also cortes had totonacs soldiers on his side before alliyng whit the tlaxcaltlans cuz he conquered theyr territory first that is now vera cruz
another important person was the comcubine of cortes who was called mallinali or spanished as "doña marina" and named "la malinche" historically,is relative unknow but famous cuz was cortes personal intrepeter in the native languages so you can imagine how usefull she was though she remained in obscurity, also she had a son whit cortes and give birth to one of the first recorded mixed race person on central america

this are banners used by cortes, though my book says he used a personal one that was blue and white whit a red cross
first one is a original one that was preserved
spanish-school-the-original-banner-of-hernan-cortes.jpg

http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/es_corte.html

I guess we will have to rethink the banners not just for this ones but for the native ones too since they used ornamentaions of feather and not flags for banners but we can add some based by some symbols like name of cities or other things to use as banners, cuz some of the decals we used on the banners before where standard shield motives and not heraldic motives

a interesting thing is that some tale says that mocthezuma send some priests to try to put a curse on cortez before arriving at technotitlan, but they found some wanderer that told them that they will deserve the oncoming catastrophe due to the abuses of the empire, the priest looked themselfs and when they turned theyr eyes ot the man he dissapeared, the priest accorded that the man must have been texcalipotca,a important god,and abandoned theyr mission

one thing is that the mesoamerican religions where very apocaliptyc, the though of incoming doom was more prevalent than say christiamisn and there wasnt salvation technically, the sacrifices and offers to the gods where done to postpone  the incoming doom, this may explain why some cities where abandoned so frequently like the maya ones, and mocthezuma was kinda paranoid about it and seemed to suspect that theyr age was coming to a end so is possible to think that was the reazon why they thought cortes was a emissary of the gods, since he was diferent and appeared whit his superior technology and horses, and cortes seemed to take advantage of this by follwing the game and pretending to be the emissary of quetzalcoatl, which ironically the tale says he went on a boat and sailed east and mentioned he will return one day

a big coincidence that changed the history of the world

a big coincidence that changed the history of the world

aztecs would be destroyed anyway, with or without that coincidence. their stone age weapons gave them no chance against 16th century europeans. if cortes would not be their destroyer, then it would be someone else.

I hate to be a smartass, but if Cortez and his men HAD been wiped out by the aztecs, the European great powers might have considered it not to be worth the sacrifice to conquer the Americas, at least for a while. Which on the other hand might have given the natives time to learn from their enemy and prepare for the coming storm, but history is full of what ifs, and wasting time in them might be interesting, but is deffinately useless. The aztecs were destroyed and we can not change it.

I think america would have ended like southasia which was conquered at a later time but wasnt "wiped out" culturally and even some places like thailand where never conquered,or it would have been like the american expansion on the west where the natives learned to use horse and guns and kept trade whit some colonies and such but ended conquered at the end though not destroyed totally

Unfortunately that did not happen. The Aztecs were lesser fortunate, than the South Asians, or even the natives peoples of North America....

however I think the culture was not wiped out entirely,in my country native traditions are still existent even thought they arent so representatives, and when I arrived here at spain it didnt felt so familiar

also the mayans "disguised" theyr religions whit catholic symbology to preserve it but is still heavyli based on ancient beliefs

cuz the native culture of america didnt dissapeared technically it was just conquered, dont know if in the usa people is so fond to native culture like the rest of latinamerica

finally found some info on the tarascan

they do used archers a lot, infact high lords where buried whit theyr bows though there is not exact details about how they where looked, but there is proof theyr bows could pierce bone and arrow tips where made of bronze and even gold

also they used maces a lot,and some weapon that looks kinda like a pickaxe show in this image, whit a blade on the tip, there where even used by two hands too supposedly
tarascanweapons.jpg

they also used maqahuitl whit obsidian blades, but it seem is decpited very litle and maybe where used by otomies mercenaryes,or more exactly semi mercenaries since some groups joined theyr rank as a mean of protection

also they didnt used axes so frequently but it was more cuz the maces where prefered to take living enemyes so they do used them in battle

also they seem to had theyr head shaved, and used tipical cotton armor like the rest of the mesoamericans

they also dug trenches to ambush enemies when they felt overwhelmed in sizes
the cronichles mention that when they attacked the city they took everythign of value they could and put them in sack, maybe the weird thing in theyr backs was the sack? but I dont think so

and they indeed didnt seemed to be masters in architecture, being the yacatas, the mentioned buildings before, theyr biggest structures

also sorry for the double

and I havent seem ajolin mentioning anything about the alpha so I hope the mod hasnt stoped

It hasnt stopped, i just been busy as of late, and im having some trouble incorperating things. RJMC, if you could send me the .OBJ files, i could convert them to BRF's and test the greyscale weapons without any textures. also, you can use some of the Native armors as a body base, if you can figure out how to get them.

didnt you picked them in mbrepository?

EDIT:also I may have chance to start the jaguar suit tomorrow

also bought another book about aztec warriors and military that is very recent and have more info, will post notable things as I read the book

after reading the book

aparently there is some doubt of the originality of the last surviving macahuitl than we mentioned as elite, that is cuz since the person who made the surviving illustrations described the circle as "golden" and there wasnt golden paint in precolumbian america, though maybe it was a misinterpretation of the yellow, though the writer still discus the fact that it might not be original and maybe something made after the conquest or even a hoax, but the museum data says it came into the musem property at 16 century but whitout any specified origin so they placed them whitt he japanese armors since it was know to be a exotic weapon,so its more probable that it was a real weapon too, especially cuz it was whit the similiar styled tepozpotlli
also is probably that it was a ritual weapon and not made for combat since those do existed to use in rituals and such

anyway is choice of ajolin and the rest of the team about implementing the weapon in the game or no and maybe use the model as decoration
I would like to add it as the elite macahuitl or something like that but dont know if it wil go too far from our focus on realism, though is obvious there will be things not historically acurate due to lack of info

also it seems the axes did where used in war even though theyr main function was to chop wood so dont need to take them out,but it seems the tarascans didnt sed them as we though first, and as mentioned before they used maces more frecuently

also the I dont remnber if this was mentioned but there was supposedly a mace whit inlaid obsidian blades that I discarded cuz I didnt find any picture of depcition of it but it does existed just that there isnt any depiction of it so we can add it to the game though we will have to invent the design  but I guess it can be as easy as just adding some spikes to the mace or some blades in a vertical way similiar to this incan mace
inca-truncheon.jpg

also as I suspected they used more lances than the tepozpotli, the tepozpotli was like a pike or to compare more to m&b like the voulge of the rodoks or other weapons like that, lances where simple designs whit obsidian or stone or bone tips,or in the case of the tarascan metal tips

another thing is that it seems that they didnt used quivers to hold arrows, they hold them on the other hands, also theyr shields where wraped in theyr arm thought hey also used hand held shields, but I guess to make life easier for us we will stick to hand helds as the tipical way the game has

also the cottom armors had variyng lenghts like covering only the torax or some reaching under the waist, aparently was rank related, and the minimun armor was some plain cloth like a vest but wasnt armor

its unknow if the helmets where really protective or just as decoration though its probaly more the former but maybe not as super protective as one may think but is still unkown

another thing is that it seems that weapons are very rarely depicted in the aztec art, like the maquahuitl, but the cronicles and facts say that it was used extensively so that means that just cuz a weapon or something isnt showns much in aztec art like statues and pottery it doesnt means it wasnt used, also the atlatl is the most depcited weapons probably cuz it was theyr favorite and it seems it was very letal, test of modern reproductions show it can even pierce the metal of a car and the cronicles say it could pierce a spanish metal armor whit the tip sticking out the back so in the game it should be very powerfull compared to the tipical javelins

that also points that the warfare was more brutal than though and even if the main goal was the capture of enemyes there was tons of deaths too

slings where used  a lot too,but I gues slings would be more complicated to add to the game isnt? like the animations and such?in that case them we better skip it

they also used plain rocks to trow a lot

one thing that the author mentions is that its probable that there was more weapons than though that where used or existed
also he dont mentions,or havent mentioned yet, anything about the pole maca or other weapons of other groups like the tarascan or else but probably is cuz the book is about the aztecs mostly

will post more as I read the book
