So time for a status update, sorry this has taken so long. I'm also sorry to say that I have mainly bad news.
The reason for the long delay in status updates is me and some of the other IRCs had a plan which ended up not coming into fruition, and as such development had to be somewhat delayed and without public news.
The plan was this: to develop Pirates over the summer in a sprint of effort with an attempt to put it in a finished state before school/university restarted for us all. What we ideally wanted was to release Pirates as a official expansion in a similar way to the development team that worked on WFAS. We developed a demo basically showing off what you've seen in the videos, along with a few more tweaks. We got in contact with the WFAS publishers (Snowberry) and although they were very impressed with what we'd done, they felt they had to focus on fixing WFAS for the community.
So with Snowberry out the picture we tried to contact Taleworlds directly. I sent several messages via e-mail and PM to the company and directly to armagan. All were ignored, without even the slightest confirmation of existence. We contacted them about releasing as an official expansion, but also failing that, the possibility of licensing the engine or releasing as some kind of paid-for mod. Fairly strange behaviour - I've served the modding community for about five years, been in contact with armagan and other developers numerous times about other issues. The only other time I've been ignored was when I applied for a job at Taleworlds and didn't get a confirmation that they'd received my application. Perhaps they have my e-mail address blocked. Anyway, offended as I am - I promised I wouldn't try to cause a ****-storm so please keep all dramatics about the issue to a minimum.
Either way - with no communication - and no sound of any potential communications we all had to leave the project and look for real, paid work over the summer. So with that most of us are largely preoccupied or unable to commit in any real capacity - so work rate has reduced to the near minimal rate it was at before. Sorry for that.
Finally, the last bit of bad news is that the main engine-side bug that boarding was facing, which was making the floating corpses and weapons has been
dismissed on the bugtracker so doesn't have much chance of being fixed or worked around.
In the good news I'll give a quick run-down of some of the features we've added since the last update:
I've rewritten a whole host of the shaders and added a lot of new cool ones which includes:
- Moving waves in the sea - for boarding and sailing.
- A new metal shader that looks great!
- A new plant shader that moves the branches and leaves in the wind
- Moving reflective water with waves on the world map
- Sails that flap in the wind
- Caustics shader for bottom of ships
Lots of cool new items, mainly by Faradon, all which look awesome:
- Several Muskets and Rifles
- Several pirate swords, cutlasses and rapiers
- Several new pistols
- Blunderbuss
- Peg leg
And some new features/tweaks:
- New map icons and parties on the world map
- Player can transition between land and sea, landing their ship anywhere near the shore and getting back on
- Player can keep ships he boards and manager a fleet of up to five ships
At some point I might compile a video of the changes, but perhaps a little more progress is due first.
