I remembered seeing this quest a lot when EA first came out and it is causing a lot of bugs and crashes for people. It was also very hard for early game. Now I just realized I haven't seen it at all for ages!
It only seems to appear when your army is too weak to fight the deserters. Once you have an army that can take them on, the quest never appears again. There may be some other reason the quest disappears shortly after you start a new game. But I have yet to see the deserters quest when I actually have an army to fight them with.

It is very much an early game quest - you get support from the village, and it is basically a way to earn good loot early on. Besides, if you ride into the village with a hundred men, the deserters are not going to show up while you are there…

That doesn't stop poachers from showing up in any villages. That doesn't scare a peasants who try to persuade you to leave their lands, they even call you a " rich bastard's lackey" for the love of Heaven. And you trying to tell me that deserters, a people with real combat and war experience, are worse than poachers who have been killing squirrels in the woods and hiding in the bushes from royal patrols? Or that a bunch of peasants with rusty pitchforks are bolder than people who've seen and fought a number of battles, maybe even survived a real slaughter? I beg your pardon, but that sounds like bollocks to me.
The fact that this quest disappears after some time is clearly a bug. "Family feud" or "Landlord needs access to X commons" are the quests which may help a low-leveled player to raise some money and gain some experince. But this quest is a bit more challenging, since the deserters' party size (and troop tiers) may increase in accordance to player's level/clan tier. But for some reason it just disappears.
Too bad that developers ignore this, but pay attention to some "CRITICAL BUG! A cat makes dog's sounds when you kill it in Aserai town!" (srsly, try killing a cat in Aserai town). The game suffers greatly from quests variability and this one may change the situation a little bit.
The one time I did this quest I had a party of just 8 men, all cav. The deserters had a party of more than forty cav. Their troops were higher level than mine too. The battle took place at night and I honestly couldn't see what transpired. Eventually it was just me riding around the village in the dark with thirty or so angry deserters following me. It didn't end well and I wound up reloading a save from before I accepted a quest.
This was the same playthrough where I tried to defend a caravan from sixty forest bandits. That did not end well either.
Holy crap, it appears again in beta 1.4.1. This is my old save that hasn't see the quest since forever. It feels good to finally stomp these ****ty deserters into the dirt. The last time I tried this, the cavalries completely ran over my recruits.

Yep, they seem to have made some adjustments, so the quest works properly again. Good to have it in store, I'm sick of endless "Family feuds" and "Missing daughters". It is also good for leveling up your troops.
