Warning - computer died after playing new M&B

I downloaded two things yesterday from this website. First the .702 upgrade and second one of Ingolif's level edits. I played M&B and everything went fine (liked your castle Ingo, but River Pirates are too stupid for it to be useful). Then I logged off and shut the computer. About an hour later I tried to start it and got an error "NTLDR missing". That means Windows can't start and there's nothing to do, I have to wipe my hard drive and reinstall everything. I may be able to save some things but it's not certain. Luckily I still have my guarantee.

I don't know if M&B was the cause of the problem but it was the only program I loaded during that session except things like Netscape, Notepad, Winamp and Word. I did have a lot of small bugs on my PC before so maybe it's something else and it was only a coincidence.

I thought it would be a good idea to warn others in advance and say I won't be posting here for a while.

Thanks for the warning Sheek.

Not sure if it was M&B that was your problem or not ... but definetely something to watch out for. If others run into this problem and post here it could help Armagan (if it was M&B).

Thanks and hope you come back soon,

NTLDR is the Windows boot loader, and it's actually a file in the root of the disk where you have your Windows installed. Are you sure you didn't delete it by accident?

And I think you don't need to reinstall everything, windows rescue console my help (you can start it when booting from your Windows CD).

Mount & Blade wouldn't have caused it.

Try this site

or

Microsofts overly complicated KB article

First though, I suggest you make sure you don't have any floppy \ cd rom in the drive

Thanks.

I have checked all my drives and there is no problem from that.

I found this (http://www.tinyempire.com/shortnotes/files/ntldr_missing.htm) page which makes a boot CD that repairs NTLDR but it doesn't work. Either it doesn't get to reading the CD or the program doesn't work. My official 'recovery CD' (that formats the hard disk) starts only when you press C but that doesn't work for the Tinyempire CD.

Do you have any idea why this is? Is there a key you must press to boot not from the hard drive?

On that computerhope page I read about BIOS but I don't know how to start it. F1, F2 and the other keys they recommend don't work.

I think I shall just send the computer to be repaired and recover what I can.

It seems like nobody else has had this problem so it can't be M&B. I must have been just unlucky...[/url]

Also I had my M&B serial key saved on my computer. The email address I got it from doesn't work any more. Hopefully the part of the hard drive with M&B on won't be damaged.

Bad news that just got worse.

I'm hoping you get lucky and can recover your M&B serial.

I got my computer back in the end. Even though I have a guarantee the computer shop support people wanted € 100s to transfer the data. I went to a lot of shops, none of the 'experts' knew anything about boot drives...

Luckily I found a website which gives you an ISO that you can burn which becomes a 'boot CD'. There is no need to use a 'recovery disk' or to format your computer hard drive. All my programs including M&B are working perfectly once more. The only problem is that my internet is cut off (but that has nothing to do with the crash).

I recommend to everyone to visit this site and keep the URL on paper in case you ever have the problem I had:
