Right... that doesn't change where Orks came from, does it?

I hate to say this, but yori is right. Orcs (WHFB) != Orks (WH40K). Nobody really knows where orcs come from. They might be mushrooms, but then again they might not be.

Actually we do.

FB Orcs aren't fungus, they're mammals. They were the original natives of the Old World (before the Old Ones came and created Elves and Dwarves).  Greenskins  all evolved from the same root (snotlings & Goblins were Orks which evolved underground).  The Orcs themselves were mutated by the increased background magic after the collapse of the Old One's gate. Black Orcs were created by the Chaos Dwarves, as an experiment to build a better slave species from the standard Orc.

Was all explained back when the Slann had six legs  Not sure if it was in one of the early supplements, or WD.

Oh my, isn't she a beauty...  Why didn't they release female models though?  I am curious about this; I didn't know there was such a discrepancy between the FB and 40K Orks.  The females do not fight?  That hottie looks like she could kick some ass if those bonbons weren't so fluffy.

Well, there's certainly none of that in my army book, but I'll buy it.

Presumably not. Ork females aren't mentioned much, so whether they fight alongside the males isn't known. I mean, who would want to check? In 40K, the Orks were created as servants of the Old One's.

I don't think it was ever in the army book. This is from back in the days when, Skaven were another form of Beastmen, Chaos Daemons were summoned to the field (and their stats were randomly rolled off a table) and goblins could push treemen off the table. There was no such thing as army books - you got supplements which usually came in a box and covered a vast amount of new rules, tables and similar. 90% of the army specific stuff was in White Dwarf rather than being released seperately, there were rules for designing your own troops and characters and you could take characters directly from WFRP or FB without needing to convert between them.
The story of the Old Ones was covered in a few different places - WFRP, Warhammer FB, WD. Its changed slightly since then (the Lizardmen are new, as are the big toad Slann - the original Slann were an improved version of the Zoats).

Im sure about Black orc stuff, and I know that 40k orks are fungus, but I have never heard that FB orcs are mammals. And Old Ones created orcs & elves about same time, or that is what I have readed.

The Old Ones never created Orcs.

They created the Elves and Dwarves at the same time (Elves to act as servants, Dwarves for mining and construction). They later created Humans to use as a weapon against Chaos (needless to say the experiment failed), took the bits that worked and created the halflings (halflings are completely immune to Chaos...)
The Zoats were either members of, or created by, the Slann. The Fimir were also created by them as an accident. Since the Slann are now Lizardmen, we can probably assume the Zoats have went the way of Squats.

Orcs were an original native species, which is one of the reasons they have Waaagh magic instead of one of the colours of magic. Waaagh magic is completely different from the usual forms of magic in that it isn't dependent on the winds of magic (I recall this had something to do with why the Old One's left them alone, but can't remember the exact reason off the top of my head). It also makes them highly resistant to Chaos.

Black Orcs and Hobgoblins were both created by the Chaos Dwarves to act as slaves. The Hobgoblins managed to escape, and the Black Orcs were abandoned. Not sure if the Ogre Kingdoms background altered this in anyway.

They do make use of a fungal race though - Squigs are fungus.

Lots of juicy background, thanks for the info.  I always wondered why Orks didn't take it up with Chaos... now it makes sense.

Warhammer has a lot to draw on, and if the original scope of the mod, which was skirmishes between Chaos clans I believe (may have changed as I didn't keep track of the old thread), was to pull through... well... that isn't as exciting sounding as WAAAAGH!!  If you are doing clan warfare, it could be Orks' infighting~
