"Warband has stopped responding" when exiting the game

I've been playing warband for 3 years now, but lately after I've played and I click exit, I get an error that says "Mount and blade warband has stopped responding", and it locks up and won't let me fully close it. Also when I start up the game, it goes through the intro, then it won't go full screen. It just shows the warband icon on the taskbar, then closes after 10-15 seconds. These are the temporary fixes I've found:

1. Delete the config file in the warband folder in my documents (then it's able to go full screen and load, but  I still get the exiting error).

I contacted paradox about the issue, but they said they don't deal with the franchise anymore, so that's why I'm coming to the forums.

PS: the event ID of these crashes in the event viewer is 1000, don't know if that helps.

I'm not very knowledgeable in the subject of computer witchery, but I can always give you my little "verify integrity of game cache if you have steam" spiel.

Have you installed/changed anything recently?
