Warband Comparison Question

What game do you think warband will be compared to?

Native was compared to oblivion.

I know of few arena style games of this type, however, and was wondering your opinion.

The first one that comes to mind is Lord of the Rings: Conquest, but that game was only half decent (or so i've heard)

Warband... Is pretty unique...As is M&B... The entire thing is unique. I think when warband comes out, it will be huge, and rival most MMO's out there, because in M&B you have more control and freedom,  you do more, like controlling your shield and sword, and dodging, jumping, and various things like that and it gives the player the excitement for an individual player they wish they had in MMO's, compared to MMO's like WoW, when you sit there and click on an AI character once and your character does all the work. So, I think it could ultimately be compared to most big MMORPG's like WoW, Perfect World, Runescape(lol?), and Conquer Online. I may be wrong, but then again, we all might be. Now, huge games like the Total War series, is almost entirely different, so i'm not going there. Lord of the Rings: Conquest is a very good game, in my opinion. Though, in most other reviews, it has been concluded that it is a mediocre game. It's good to think about this question. Props

I like to describe it as a medieval combat simulator. There's only on that I know of, there are other relatively realistic melee combat mods out there, but they don't do the horse thing very well, if at all.

I bet someone will compare Darkfall and Warband, just because Darkfall's combat...

I was gonna put Darkfall in there somewhere.
But then I checked out some Youtube videos, and it looked like total crap, so I didn't bother for the sake of looking like a complete idiot.

Darkfall is actually pretty nice game. Although I got bored because of few problems... I believe they are already fixed already so now that this topic reminded me of the game I think I'll start playing it again. One of few playable MMOs.

They will have to compare it to something already out there- life cannot go on if they don't.  Darkfall is my choice too- I found M&B while looking for information on Darkfall.  I think the wikipedia entry mentioned the M&B style of fighting.

I had a buddy who was in the beta for Darkfall; he was disappointed too, but said there was hope.  Still, it's become a little too 'high' fantasy for me.  Still, we all know every game developer out there will copy this style of combat, and soon every MMORPG will be the same as M&B but with different graphics.

Isn't there some kind of patent or copyright or something that lets people keep their ideas to themselves and their own games?

I think it would be hard to patent the idea of this style of fighting.  That would be like if the makers of Castle Wolfenstein had the rights to FPS shooters- they'd all be trillionaires now.  I think it's fine as long as they can show they didn't use the same code.

Patents don't cover ideas, they cover specific processes, inventions, etc.

You could patent the combat in M&B, but someone will come along and modify the method or add features that it is missing.  That version could then be patented, it would be different.  There would also be no reason at all to patent it, it isn't like you can sell a combat module from M&B that can be used in other games.

Unfortunately, patents can be worded so ambiguously that they can cover almost anything. NCsoft (who made Guild Wars, City of Heroes, and several other MMOs) is being sued by a company called Worlds.com for infringing their patent on a "system and method for enabling users to interact in a virtual space". If the court upholds their questionable patent, Worlds.com would be owed royalties by almost every MMO in existence and could sue those that refuse to pay. Seriously.

Patents are regional, and just because something was patented, doesn't mean the patent was proper.  A US patent won't hold up in China, simply because they couldn't care less about stealing a US Patent.

These lawsuits happen all the time, and something so ridiculous does not often hold up.  You can't patent the idea, only the method in which that idea was implemented.  Lawsuits like this are just money grabs, any prior use will null the patent.  The plaintiff is hoping that the lawsuit costs exceed the pay out so NCsoft will just pay them off, which then sets precedents for future lawsuits.
