Yes, I know, it was more a Dark Ages thing, but I lke the idea!! A big war-hound, only available from the Salt Mines, which has most of the NPC stat.s, obviously no ranged capacity. One-handed attack = paws, 2-handed = fangs. Dogs would be very loyal, no matter what party morale! They would also, importantly, always stick as close as poss. to hero and fight alongside them.
Spiked collars and leather harnesses could be made available.
They would start with good tracking skill!
Horses would be rear up in fear if attacked by one.

Anyone else got thoughts on this?

Here we go, page 2 of search in suggestions forum for war dogs. I totaly hope they make it into the game!

They can nearly always go for the balls however. Very few armours actually had much there, and if they had anything, it was usually leather/maille, which while might keep the dog for actually making off with the family jewls, would still allow VERY painful crushing action.
 
I think it may be silly and messy but I would certainly like to slain dogs for the fun of it, I would really like if in the future the Arena Expansion mod could include wild animals for the player to duel with, like lions, bears, tigers, elephants, ostrichs and whatever other beasts you could think of:

"Mr. Maximus, you're going up against a pack of wolves with this black robe and this wooden staff, good luck! Oh, and how would you like your grave again?"

Yeah I know... I make armor myself. But in-game it should be a little too advanced really...

maybe Dogs could give you bonuses in detection, and tracking.
i have proposed a new skill of "breeding" or something like that, dogs could fill animal slots as horses would do.
(see the horses enhancement thread)
they would be really effective against light infantry and could scare/kill horses
i think Dogs and Wardogs are a great idea.
 
War Dogs would be pretty complicated, though. Like, they could go for the head, because if the dog attacked the head, the neck is pretty unprotected usually. But nevertheless, even then, you'd have to set up lots of collision animation for biting and pawing not to mention entirely new models for everything. I'd love to see it, but I don't know if it's a realistic wish.
 
people have been asking for animals as untis (eg: hunting, bears/tigers attacking) its impossible to implement without bugs, so leave it alone
 
It'd be cool to have animals as units. It would really help the mods too.... hopefully they'll find a way to implement it.
 
Hmmm, I suppose to avoid all the animation work...you could set the dogs as horses. Then you would have to do alot of scripting (AI, changing a horse unit to soldier, etc). It looks like its either animation work or scripting work either way.

It would be better to re-do animations, perhaps it could be done like spore where the game can figure out the way an x-legged creature should walk... this way it would make modding spiders, etc. in much easier.
