Wait, when did we move to the fastest combat setting?

I don't mind the fastest. I do a touch better with the fastest settings in a duel server, as the other players make more mistakes.

Yes, on duel servers it's pretty acceptable to have it on fastest (though preferrably not all the time, ping starts to matter more so highpingers will put up less of a good fight), but I'd say it's pretty bollocks to set any other gamemode on it. Perhaps deathmatch would still do, because it's all about personal combat skill, but even then I'd rather advise normal.

We changed the ATS server over to test fastest a couple days ago and everyone agreed that the difference wasn't large at all and that combat felt much smoother.

I think fastest combat speed makes combat easier and more accessible. At medium speed, slow animations cause clumsy glancing blows for a lot of people until they get the timing down; fastest is much more fluid with less chamber time to take into account. Manual blocking feels smoother as well because of the increased block speed. It raises the melee skill ceiling in a way that I can go 15-0 in a round of fair fights but still get caught off guard by a quick overhead on the last person.

Its also nice that you actually have a chance to hit someone who is good at blocking without kicking.

This sums up my view entirely.  It seems fastest speed allows for the greatest skill diversity.

Sure whatever.  I'll be on the NK server until you guys stop encouraging mindless spamming.  Even on normal the average fight is over in 3-5 swings.  With your settings its over in 2.  These settings **** over everyone who isn't under 20 ping.  The attack is over before you even see it on your screen.

I don't quite agree, since it means the learning curve becomes even steeper for new players, and it encourages left mouse button bashing. It's a reasonable idea to set it to fastest on a duel server, because people are there to either train or show off their combat skills.

On a battle server, there are generally a good deal of people who cannot manually block too well, but who will generally give it a try when it comes to it. On normal speed, they can be successful from time to time and can get the hang of it with enough practice. If you are playing on fastest, it discourages the new player even more. Why bother even attempting to block when you know you're going to get hit anyway? Why not simply keep clicking LMB in the hope that you'll catch your opponent by surprise?

The skill difference may possibly become somewhat more pronounced when amongst skilled players and skilled players only, but on a regular server, you're just shoving the casual players all together in the cupboard while leaving the rest of the house for the two or three manual blocking champions on the server, the room in the house being a metaphor for the skill difference.

seawied play some warband! i have not seen you in forever.

As for the speed setting, i really do not see a difference. I block pretty much the same with any setting as far as i know.

As far as the argument that faster combat speed requires greater skill, I can't really agree.  Medium speed is a really good compromise of reflex and quick thinking.  The way I see it, making it faster just requires more reflex and less on-the-go strategizing.

Yeesh, I sound like those newbies who complain about the "Red Bull" players.

It's a subtle difference, but with high ping or with a bad connection, you are dead.

Also I'll go ahead and continue the argument that as apposed to "fastest" a slightly slower speed (medium for example) not only makes it easier for total noobs but also results in more skilled, technical play. First of all, it takes more skill in timing on the slower speeds. Second, wit rather than twitch-reflexes becomes a more important brain function.

Not to mention the fights are longer and more epic.

Basically, to put it short:
there is more art in "medium" combat than in "fastest"

Besides, the game was balanced on the Medium speed setting.  The scimitars and short swords already pushed the margin, now they're just too lightning-fast.  There's a reason everybody uses them.  As far as I'm concerned, unorthodox speed settings will always be a mere gimmick.

I agree, super-speed is nothing more than a gimmick.
It's already hard enough to find a populated server with an acceptable ping (from Michigan), but now so many are at lolspeed, that for a decent experience, sometimes all that's left is nK's servers (not a bad thing mind you, those guys are awesome) so more accessiblility would be nice.

It's one of the problems of translating MnB into multiplayer, it had a very customizable experience (which it could do because it was single player only), but online all that does is fragment the community

POM has it on fastest, they alot more traffic than us when we had it on medium. So we make it to fastest and see how it goes, and we are getting more traffic after that. So it seems alot of people like it more than not.

I've been on sparingly lately as my social life has been intruding on my game time
