Wagon Forts...any good?

Hi,i ve used the wagon forts a couple of times, but always they proved to be useless, the fort being more like a slaughter house ,my troops practicly being trapped inside

Or am i playing a bad strategy?

Wagon Forts are great if you have a lot of marksmen.

The only way for the enemy units to get to you, is through 2 small chokepoints, which you cover with your melee.

While they are getting to the entrance, they are basically sitting ducks, to be killed by your marksmen.

What the...?!
When I played my first campaign, as Polish commander of sharpshooters, wagon fort was best thing I could imagine! I always had few infantrymen, who I placed at the entrance, and my marksmen just shot most of the enemies down.
It's a very good thing when you're greatly outnumbered and have mostly ranged infantry units.
Because yes, it's pretty much useless when your army is based on cavalry.

Wagon forts are perfect if you're using the Cossacks, my 90 Serducks will take down 160 enemy troops with less than 20 losses, I would assume it would equally as well with Swedish Lifeguards or Crimean Janissary.

It is supposed to allow gunners to attack with impunity while you block the entrance with swordmen. Maybe the units you use do not have ranged weapons?.I know that the cossacks and sweden do well in Wagon Forts, but the khans get obliterated easily.Polish units would suffer from it too since their best unit is a melee horseman. Wich race did you play?
he is probably playing ork... what kinda question is this?

Too bad infantry and calvary are to dumb to jump, that is how I get over the wagons!

Imagine the horde of your enemies all just jumping up and over your wagon fort while you were hoping they'd go around through the back door. lol!

Another strategy, the one i use. Requires having about 6-15 melee infantry to plug the 2 small entrances, 10-30 Calvary, and 2-3 singulares, with the rest being marksmen.

You leave the Marksmen in the fort, while forcing your Calvary and singulares to follow you away from the enemy and fort. As the enemy begins making its way closer you force your Calvary to charge around the enemy's infantry straight into the marksmen leaving you and 2-3 singulares to roam killing from horse back. (i typically use my small elite group to break up clusters of marksmen).

I have used this strategy with anywhere of 30-87 men against 2 to 3 times that number successfully.

Being a cowardly and unimaginative bastard, I'd probably just run circles around the enemy back and forth in front of the fort, getting my marksmen to pepper them with rounds again and again.

Half the marksmen crouch down and just hit the side of the wagons for me making it a lot weaker after the patch.

it saved my butt many times... you can be 30 marksmen vs a polish army of 100 and you win... i did it

I would be careful with this, because the enemy typically has a lot of Marksmen who are good at hitting targets that move solo and in patterns. This is another reason why i have a small 2-3 elite group moving with me, it helps shelter me against bullets, because i provide them with Shields, sabers, and pistols.

but to each their own.

Thanks for this thread! I was never using the wagons, untill I read this and tryied some of the strategies sugested here. And I gotta say that it really worked great!!! With my 20th level char and a party of 60 cossacks, half of them elite/veteran cossack marksmen, I defeated a muscovich army of 160 men!!! (playing on hard)

To be quite honest with you, the reason that I didn't bother to use the wagon before is that I'm too adicted to the normal battlefield. So I kind of avoided bother to work around new aproaches to the battle, as a wagon demands. But when I read this thread, people saying that defeated their enemies being outnumbered without suffering huge casualties, I decided to really give it a try. SO, what I did was the obvious thing to be done, I told my marksmen to hold inside the wagon (by the way, all of them were elite or veteran cossacks mercenaries riflemen), and my cavalrymen and infantry men holding the choke points, while I move around doing my part and taking a lot of them out too!

Edit: I told my cavalrymen to unmount, as I only got a few infantry men, so I could have a decent number holding the choke point! I did have to kill some horses real quickly though, so people could move around and get to theiur places! But I also let some of them alive, because tehy do some blocking to.
And when the last enemies reinforcements entered the field I just told everybody to charge! (this was only in the very end of the battle)

BTW is your profile pic a picture of a ww1 ottoman Calvary trooper?

Nope, it's a cossack in a gas mask! http://www.ssplprints.com/image/125873/cossack-in-a-gas-mask-november-1938
