Just check the video I posted a page back, that guy also has other videos using spears in one on one combat.

Again, no one seems to see that not all soldiers - especially back then, would have training like that. More than likely they were taught basics and then handed a weapon. The only real professional soldiers were either retinues or mercenaries.
And it'd take months if not years to be that good, which is time most risen levies don't have.

Well, then again. If you met a viking at age 30 or so, he would have plenty of experience.

Well, then again. If you met a viking at age 30 or so, he would have plenty of experience.

They weren't always fighting. Vikings were also pretty good traders and farmers. Even if there would be some hardcore fighter who would have fought 20 years he would have good armour and wouldn't be that kind of poor bastard who would fight with puny spear. As spears were pretty much the most simple weapons which where easy to make and use. Proper warrior would use real weapon like sword or axe.

No hardcore fighter would specialize in spears for 1v1 combat.

Ya but they wouldn't most likely be so ninja-like with it. Especially as spear isn't so good offensive weapon and full armor-clad men wouldn't be best ones to use one as they couldn't maximize the use of their strenght using those.

I don't think there were many warriors, proffesional or not who wouldn't have a spear. Looking at many burials - usually there's quite a few javelin/spearheads and one sword or axe. Other than that, I don't think mighty norsemen would have had their main, oldest and most powerful god of war equipped with a spear (gungnir) if it wasn't useful for experienced warriors.


Spear is by far my favourite weapon in history. It's cheap, easy to make, lets you hit enemies that are far away, and is pretty fast. However you just can't say a spearman is not vulnerable compared to the swordsman or an axeman. Fighting with a spear is mostly finding occasions and tiny gaps in enemie's defences. If your enemy has ONLY you to focus on, he most prodably will not leave many gaps - you'll be dead before you start looking for them. That french video only shows a short bit of sword vs. spear scenario. The swordsman is completely idle and has no shield. It can't be possibly used as a reference... You can do much more with a spear in real life than in Vikindr, but then it applies to EVERY weapon in the mod.

On a completely other topic - would it hurt to bring back the ability for shields to block missiles, while hang on the back (or at least massively decrease damage dealt)? Best if it would also apply to the melee, but only on the body zone hit from behind. I think it was removed to prevent ninja turtles with shields on their backs as well as in hand, but then there's now only one slot for a shield, so you can't do that anyway.

Dragomir the same applies otherwise. When having a spear your not suddenly destined to die when someone uses a sword or a axe.

Also regarding the new version, just had a round where a Rus team was 3/8 infantry. 4/8 cav and 1 archer.

Okey, I might not have given enough credit to spear, but the truth still is that it was mostly a weapon to be used in shieldwall, not in one to one combat.

It would make more sense that when thrusting with spear you could cover yourself more with your shield compared to when you strike with a sword or axe as the movement isn't so radical.

I'm not the expert of Edda, but I'm not 100% sure that Gungnir was pure melee weapon as it was traditional to start a battle with throwing a spear right over the enemy army to claim it for Odin. The Æsir-Vanir War is also described as officially starting when Odin throws a spear over the heads of an assembly of Vanir gods. And considering that the achenemy of Odin was a friggin' wolf it would make sense to give him a weapon also useful in hunting

Yea I would like also to see shield with more passive defensive traits as it would enhance the reality-goal of this mod. It's really pain in the ass when you get killed by a sword or axe when you stop defending for a fraction of second even though your animation shows that the shield was still between the weapon and your soon-to-be-cut face.

Tis why the Roman angone was designed to bend/break after being thrown. Also I believe it is mentioned in lore that some chaps would remove the rivet from their spears so if they missed they couldn't be pulled out of the ground and hurled right back.

That was indeed a silly brain fart from the many times me and Leofwine would whine about Engle, then Saxons needing a good ole anti cav throwing weapon and suggesting the angon based on Mr Pilum. I apologise.

Neither in Vikingr. I think spears shorter than the wielder should be able to block, the longer ones not without shield.

And you should make a version that just updates from 0.98 to 1.00.

Hello!

I have a person who cannot Download Víkingr, he gets this error: "The file you have selected (Vikingr_full_install.exe) is not available via any mirrors."

I have tried both available mirrors and it works fine for me.

I had this problem the first time I tried to download Vikingr months ago. Unfortunately, it was a firewall issue for me. So, I lowered my firewall, installed the mod, raised my firewall, then did a PC sweep for any viruses and what not. You can tell him to do that.
