I understand that used en masse are very deadly, but rarely do I see someone bring a spear, other than myself, of course.

Spears were deadly in single combat as well, not only when you're hiding behind someone who has a weapon that actually is able to block.

But this way you're encouraged to stay in formation, which is a plus. Sometimes unrealistic things are needed to produce realistic results.

Spearmen still have shields, and they should always pack a side weapon anyway in case someone gets too close.

I agree. Spearmen weren't really know for fighting by themselves, especially in the Western world.
You're not a Shaolin monk, after all.

The key to spears is formation.

How do you know?

Because they were utilized in formations, like most warfare, even if unorganized. If a spearman found himself by himself, chances are he's going to go for his secondary weapon if he had one. Spears are only really useful when in formations to defend against cavalry or even when mounted, etc.

A spearman could fight by himself, but he'd have to be extremely well trained and/or lucky. Most people from the end of the Dark Ages to the Age of Exploration only had training in formations with spears, not one on one.

In a 1v1, I actually do quite good with a spear. I'm astonishingly good with kicking, as a defense. I'll kick, and with the enemy in stun, I follow up with a stab to the head, often killing them, or doing enough damage to I can switch to axe or seax and finish them off. My biggest problem, is the people who strafe and spam attacks at you. With a spear equipped, it's very hard to win against a flurry of attacks (spamming).

Ya that wasn't the case irl, but there should be a possibility to change your weapon at least ro seax while covering yourself with shield. I believe that there wasn't that much kicking during the middle age if you happened to have a spear.

Lol, I agree. There should be a way to switch to small weapons while blocking. It's very hard for me, as I said, to fight someone who spams attacks at me while I'm using a spear. If I try to switch weapons, they have a second where they can land a free hit, and depending on the placements and weapon they are using, they can instantly kill me. And, yes... I doubt kicking was much used at all. I don't think people wanted to get their leg sliced off.

Exactly, never quite understood why people think someone with a spear should be a guaranteed kill in a duel.

Look at this for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tY3GtNoxAdM

A skilled spearman could easily win a duel by keeping the opponent at distance. The other guy will have a hard time to close the gap and when he tries to do so, he might open up for the spearman to land a hit.

The thing that everyone misses is that a lot of armies weren't professionally trained. A lot were peasants in armour. And the mod especially being aimed about warbands against each other, that means equipment would be whatever they could get their hands on - And sure they'd bit a little more skillful, but they most likely wouldn't be as good as to use a spear one on one.

Realistically, anyway.

You can't possibly run backwards as fast as someone else can run forwards. And if you know what your're doing (and in most "examples" people don't) you will shorten your distance to the spearman as fast as possible. You will NEVER EVER allow a spearman"keep the opponent at distance". If you do, you're dead. In reenactment, with shield broad enough and a seax or a sword I can dispatch a lone spearman (that has trained this weapon for 12 years and has a ******** black belt in Aikido) without  much problems. I will just wait until the spearhead is close enough, catch it on my shield and INSTANTLY run forwards constantly pushing the spear away. It takes about half of a second until the spearman can't get a clean thrust, forcing him to close quarter combat (the guy I fight with always has a backup seax). The only hope then is to kick or pull out a seax (both you can do in Vikingr), because really, I assure you, trying to pull your spear back if it's not a short spear is just too slow.
However, it only takes that we have a fight 2 v 2, and he has someone to hide behind and to keep the opponents away so he can keep the distance - both of his enemies will have their balls squeezed by his spear.

****, I think I have to get my ass to the training and film that thing, to finally get rid of all the doubts.

Hehehe, well sure. You seem pretty well know within this subject, so i'll take your word for it.

Just check the video I posted a page back, that guy also has other videos using spears in one on one combat.
