Viking Conquest can save us!

I dont know about other people, but to me some of the mechanics in Viking Conquest seem well suited to Bannerlord.
For example in VC you can:
  • Choose story or sandbox mode (This allows those who want the main quest to play it while giving the option to disable it for those who find it restrictive and annoying and just want to do whatever they please)
  • Marry and have kids (which needs you to choose the dialogue option, meaning that you wouldnt end up with dozens of kids like you do at the moment)
  • Buy a ship and sail the seas (I think it is a really cool idea that would give added importance to coastal cities as more merchants can reach them.)
  • Build a hideout (This seem like it would be great for a rogue/criminal playthrough, and can help store your elite troops early on as you try to train up new recruits)
Some things you guys have said:
  • Religion (Could reduce trade profits with a trade perk to deal with it, as well as impacting the loyalty of a settlement, forcing you to find a governor of the same religion.)
  • Random events as you wait in towns and travel the world (Just makes the world feel more alive)
  • More siege options (This makes it more viable to starve out the defenders which would work really well if sieges caused the attackers a lot more casualties than they do currently)
  • Places of Interest (After completing some sort of trial the player could be rewarded with a unique item or even a new companion with a certain skill really high, for example a legendary blacksmith with maxed out smithing)
  • The ability to plunder a town after taking it
  • Release prisoners with a bandit leader to attack and raid your enemies (This would make raiding more interesting if there are really high relationship and honour penalties for raiding a village)
  • Better formations (A shieldwall with shields in the front and spears behind, as well as the ability to make troops spread out and stand closer, although this was in warband and seems to have been replaced with the loose formation)
If there is anything I missed feel free to add stuff (i havent played VC in a while), but i really hope they add at least some of this stuff.

Ship combat, naval traval or trading system? If ship combat is too hard to implement when they somehow managed to implement it in warband would be beyond me. Same goes for the other options, wasn't this engine supposed to be better? This dosent seem very true to me.

Link to statement needed, I 100% agree with you on the first point.

Dont know where i heard it so i removed it. Also i was talking about trading but naval combat would also be really cool. They could use sea raiders or something as bandits for the merchant vessels. They could also add siege equipment to ships like in total war attila, and then massive sea battles would be so cool!

Shield walls that Automatically place units without Shields in the back and those with Shields up Front.

The Ability to tighten or loosen formations

Also, the "Advance ten paces" command.

And not to forget, waaaaaaay less cavalry.

There was naval combat, but it was really land combat on moving platforms.

That being said, it was kinda cool.

1: Yes, this should definitely be in the base game. Ridiculous to have to use one of 11 mod slots just to disable the broken story mode.
2: Sure, they do seem to have a lot of kids. Doesn't bother me that much but I get your point.
3: Ships would be nice, at least just add the mechanic even if the map isn't particularly made for it, would make it easier for mods based on better maps.
4: Build a hideout, why not.

Other things from VC: More effective spears, less effective bows.

More events and meaningful quests/story that affect you later as you takeover the map. The game right now is a grind fighting in the fields, and then more fighting at castles. That's all it is!

You know, this whole time I thought Bannerlord would pick up where Viking Conquest left off. I always thought It was a huge Improvement over the Native Warband. Making Bannerlord more closely resemble Warband feels like two steps forward, one step back imo. Although there isn't nearly as much sea in Bannerlord as in Europe, Perhaps adding another island kingdom off the coast of Vlandia (Nord raiders ?) would be a good idea, but we're in the Expansion territory there.

Also, the army mechanics(and numbers) were much better in VC and overall the world felt just more alive and vibrant.

Me too, moving over from VC, there are just so many things missing that make the world less interactive and alive. A partial list that others haven't really mention:

- Straight up ask bandits to join you, although at the moment BL bandits surrender very often, so maybe there is no need for this anymore.
- Player with bad reputation (i.e raider) can sell loots in bandit lair.
- Multiple options of what to do with conquered town: you can claim it, or if you think you can not hold onto the town, just pillage it for loots and then left a ruin.
- Extort caravan for toll money, a less severe banditry option compare to raiding the caravan. I think this was in Warband, too.
- Masterless Men (Deserters) that are both hostile but also fight other bandits!
- You can spawn new outlaw parties by releasing a Bandit Leader and 50+ prisoners! Just plop them down in the middle of enemy territory and let them do their thing.
- Random special events.
- Special locations with associated events: an old ruins, old pagan stone circle... Imagine in BL visiting an Ruined Battanian temple from pre-Imperial time, inhabited only by a bunch of super hardcore Old God worshiping Wolfskins, that is too extreme for even the mainstream Wolfskin. They could provide a trial of strength for the player, no armor no shield combat challenge etc..

Many of these can be added later, but the vision for BL does seem to lean toward WB more...

I'm not sure which army mechanics are you talking about, but there's one irritating thing I remember clearly - troops were gaining XP way too slow, like it felt almost impossible to upgrade any troop to high tier.

But overall, I liked VC features, so many good things, like religion, places of interests with its own unique stories, forcing Lords to give you their profits via putting them in jail and torturing them, different events during siege and so on.

And yes, as was mentioned above, it was a good thing that we could choose between story mode and sandbox mode. Right now all we have is an quite irritating and unfinished quest about battle of Pendorac and "This is a generic backstory". Though, it's an EA, I hope many features will be implemented in the future.

Worth saying, afaik VC was a different developer.
Still there were some good design strides made in VC TW could learn from.
