Victoria is to be a republic state in Australia

I must report that our Constitution and our Monarchy face a dire threat, this time from within the State of Victoria where the Brumby government has undertaken, if re-elected later this year (the election is on the 27th November 2010), to conduct one or more plebiscites to demonstrate support for an Australian head of state, and to then initiate an appropriate referendum to make Victoria a state republic.

Our Australian Constitution is also the contract of the federation of the States specifying that they are to be in an indissoluble union ‘under the Crown’. I would have thought it would not be possible for Victoria to declare itself a state republic, both under our Constitution and under the Australia Acts, but the Victorian Labor government is well known for its cavalier treatment of constitutional matters, arbitrarily removing anything to do with the Queen and replacing them with the State or state functionaries.

The obvious course of action is for all monarchists, whatever their political persuasion, to rid Victoria of this pestilent government and its seditious policies.

does this annoy anyone else ?damn aussie republicans

Kinda doubt the reliability of this one. In the past, whenever there have been proposals to declare a Republic, there's been a referendum on the matter. I don't see how a state could just unilaterally declare themselves a republic without the consent of the Federal government.

yer, I was thinking that myself, I mean they can't just wake up one day and go  " yep, were a republic state now"

it's a little far fetched .. but... you never know, lately the republicans have done some crazy shizzle and got away with it...

Good joke Jlgx50. You are joking right? You don't actually believe the state of Victoria is going to break away? The federal government wouldn't allow it but all the other state governments would be behind Victoria because we don't want that bunch of junkies, whores and old people.

They are useless after all, except a decent place to see the snow.

I'm not Australian, so maybe I'm missing something, but I fail to see how this could annoy anyone.

Maybe it's getting confused with WA. I heard recently that many people in WA want to secede because they feel that they will get raped by the mining tax and because Western Australians somehow think they are superior to the rest of the country.

Anyway if they try it, good luck maintaining independence! Lol

that doesn't suprise me, Westan Australia does things diffrently to the rest of Australia

heh good luck to them  this has been going on for weeks, the problem is that the stats own the minerals not the federal govament, and the federal goverment is trying to controle  what the states own

Yer i knew that artical i posted was true, as far fetched as it sounds that Mr Brumby chap actually plans to turn his state of "victoria" into a republic if re elected

http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/brumbys-class-war-manifesto-20100528-wlkj.html

A RE-ELECTED Brumby government will push for Australia to become a republic, try to rewrite Victoria's constitution and launch an assault on cyber-bullying in schools.

The platform says Labor will conduct plebiscites to demonstrate support for an Australian head of state, and will then ''initiate an appropriate referendum'' on a republic

I'm with Earl_of_Rochester

Isn't it slightly ironic to have a state by the name of Victoria vying to become a republic?

Nah, she was German to start off with.

Don Doggy 说:
Will this mean Australian Civil War?
No, but it may mean people buying cool cars and driving across the desert in search of oil and stuff. Possibly involving Tina Turner.

Why would you support the monarchy? Nothing but a dictatorship wrapped in velvet cloak.

Style my darling, imperial style.
