Well, now that it is over, the discussion has begun.  Many people say that Palin was the victor, and in more than one way.  She proved that she was more than just McCain's lapdog, and has opinions of her own, she was also very knowledgeble about the various topics.  Biden, while attempting to seem factual, was wrong on more than one occasion.  His most greivous blunder was in the discussion of Obama's diplomatic policy.  He said that Obama had never said that he would sit down with Achma-what ever the hell his name is, without pre-conditions.  He also said that McCain voted the same way as Obama on the budget resolution.  He did not.  He also reffered to the Bsh administration waaaay too often.  Of course I am a Republican and therefore my perceptions of this debate may be a little iased, but the real question is.....

What do you think?

Why shouldn't he mention the Bush administration? Because we should just keep rolling forward like a runaway train and forget about all of the destruction that is left in its wake? "Why dwell on the past?" would be a funny thing for a murderer to say as he is being arrested.

From what I've heard, Biden won the debate. I didn't bother to watch it though, hell, I didn't even watch the Canadian Leader's debate .

I was expecting more of a train wreck

@OP:

Palin made mistakes too you know. I forget a few they mentioned, but one was when she claimed Obama voted to raise taxes or something, when he actually voted on something that involved the budget and did not affect taxes. And McCain voted the same for that.

She also confused a few people, and mis-pronounced a few names to get nit-picky. She was too cute and not focused enough on business. She acts as if she's a celebrity, sneaking in big winks while she talks and randomly waves to the crowd like she's at a party. She looked directly into the camera the entire time, which follows the same suit. Biden addressed the host and Palin and the audience.

Obviously, my knowledge of politics is very limited, and my opinion is not a professional one. But Palin annoys the hell outa me. And I want to point out that Biden was not the only one to make mistakes.

I just can't wait for SNL on Saturday to see what they make of this.

"I have a diverse group of friends. I love my family. I'm a mayor. I love oil."

That's what I got from Palin.

I watched about an hour before my internal bull**** detector sent me running. I can only take so much. **** Palin, and **** conservatives. (At least the kind we have in the US)

I watched about 20 minutes - was all I could stand. What I observed was that Palin was talking about what her and McCain would do, while Biden just kept talking about what the Bush administration has done. With Palin looking forward, and Biden being on the defensive. She seemed calm and cool and friendly. He seemed grumpy - only in comparison to her and not necessarily so if he was the only speaker. She won from a purely "debate" point of view. About the substance, all politicians are full of **** so it don't matter

Well she did better than I expected, I'll give her that.

Roughly 45 minutes in, i had to switch off my bull**** meter though, before it ran out of batteries. She said so many empty statements, You know, vague stuff about helping out the middle class in america, while Joe Biden had already pointed out in depth that the GOP policies regarding tax would do nothing of the sort.

I found Joe Biden to be a bit slow at the start, speaking in a monotone voice that sounded like he needed to clear his throat. But towards the later stages he seemed better at putting emphasis in where emphasis was needed, rather than letting key points slip by in his uniform sentences at the start of the debate.

What I found most alarming was how much the two disagreed on the stances and their policies of their own running mates. Sarah palin would say one thing attributed to McCain, and Biden would say actually McCain said something different.

The bbc are only interveiwing drunk republican women, so I am getting a biased point of view...

I view debates as more of a political Rorschach test than anything else. If you favor one candidate over the other, you will see him/her as having been very successful while seeing their opponent as a dismal failure. If you didn't really favor either, you'll see it as pretty even, unless one of them failed spectacularly. Debates aren't really debates anyway. For one thing they're basically rehearsed to death, there's very little spontaneity. For another, it always seems to boil down to a fundamental disagreement on what the facts are, which means that there's really no common basis upon which to HAVE a debate. I mean, if the two sides can't even agree about what actually happened, then they are in fact talking past each other, which isn't a real debate in my book. Quite frankly I wouldn't miss it if they got rid of the debates all-together and replaced them with question-and-answer sessions in which the candidate is prohibited from avoiding a direct response to a question. Give them a lie detector too, so they can't just lie about their own record and how they really feel about the issues. But then, I can't imagine that either candidate would be willing to put themselves through that.

Was anyone else as disturbed as I was by Palin's response to the question of what the vice president's role is?

"Of course, we know what a vice president does. And that's not only to preside over the Senate and will take that position very seriously also. I'm thankful the Constitution would allow a bit more authority given to the vice president if that vice president so chose to exert it in working with the Senate and making sure that we are supportive of the president's policies...
"our founding fathers were very wise there in allowing through the Constitution much flexibility there in the office of the vice president. And we will do what is best for the American people in tapping into that position and ushering in an agenda that is supportive and cooperative with the president's agenda in that position."

Her view of the role of the vice presidency is to subvert the authority of the legislative branch, effectively transferring some of its power to the executive branch (the President). That goes against a fundamental purpose of the U.S. Constitution, which clearly divides the government into three separate parts so that no single part can subvert another.

Does no one else see how dangerous this is?

Yeah, that was a little strange.  I think politically it was meant to woo conservatives into thinking she would be highly involved as they dont think much of McCain.  I havent seen a single McCain yard sign or bumper sticker yet.  In 2004 there were "W" signs everywhere.

She basically ran an infomercial.  Ive never seen anyone dodge questions like that and actually come out and say she was going to dodge them.  She never left her rote comfort zone.

Also didn't she say just after being nominated for VP that she didn't know what a VP did?

Yeah, but she says it was a joke, which is fine.  She's said much worse since.  Last week was a disaster for her.

Now the plan will be to hide her from interviews to avoid more gaffes and hope McCain can reverse trends himself.

I'm just waiting for scrutinizers to post about any of the "facts" that Biden stated. Like, when he said in 1929, President Franklin D. Roosevelt went on TV and told the people there is a crisis (the Great Depression). LOL

From the to articles I read about the latest debate, neither Biden nor Palin "won" but Palin regained much of what she lost earlier. Still, I think its funny how people criticize Palin for stupidity when you read about what crap/hipocrisy Biden and Obama pulls all the time.

Biden's gaffes have been widely reported.  As have McCain's and Obama's, who have made fewer.

The difference between those three and Palin's gaffes are like night and day.  She isnt stupid, she's just ignorant of these issues.  She simply hasnt followed this stuff and is playing catch up.  Thats why she dodged so many questions and stuck to her talking points last night.    That's all she can do at the moment.

One point of comedy was that iirc Palin tried to take a shot at Biden over his depression gaffe but gaffed herself. She didnt say it properly. She said, "Biden thought FDR was president during the depression".  That's actually true.  She didnt get the talking point right.  But that's not important, its silly.  It's her interviews that scared so many people.
