Very Important Issue with Purchasing Warband

I saw that I had to purchase Warband as I could not use my original M&B serial number for it. I went through the link on the Taleworlds main website to purchase Warband.

After I input all necessary and required credit card information, a new Java menu opened asking for a "Password" linked to my credit card. No password of any sort is required for an internet purchase of a computer game.

What the hell does Taleworlds want my credit account password for? I will not make a purchase again from a company who has what appears to be a phishing or keylogger scam running off a direct link to their site.

In Finland at least most people have Debit cards instead of proper credit cards, and when using those you need to authorise every purchase through your banks service.

I believe it's another anti-fraud measure taken by several banks. It happened to me, too.

Anti-fraud? This ENCOURAGES stealing accounts! There is no need, no reason, to give out information relating to my bank account to purchase a game. This did not occur the times I bought Mount & Blade.

I would rather not have the game through Steam or Impulse. It worries me that this is occurring on the main download site.

Avangate is a well established payment gateway who handles the entire payment process. If you're worried about them, feel free to check their site and see if their client list and security practices meet your standards or not.

If you feel they don't, well, as you already know, there are several other purchasing options available.

Further, the password request for these sort of things is basically always handled by your bank themselves or one of their affiliates and a simple "pass" or "fail" result sent back to the payment gateway service to indicate whether you were confirmed as authorized. Your browser should show you whether the connection to that page is encrypted and secure or not. The URL (address) of the password requesting screen should give you an idea who is actually requesting it, and you should be perfectly capable of looking up the first part of the address to confirm its legitimacy.

EDIT: I should add, such password requests for Credit/Debit cards are not that uncommon. For purchases with my Visa debit card (which works as a credit card), several more cautious online stores run the payment through the "Verified By Visa" authentication service run by Visa where you likewise have to enter a password you established earlier (NOT your bank password, though if you were stupid enough I guess you could set it to be the same). Not all sites require it, it just depends; for the ones that do, I always check the URL just to be sure it's legitimate.

Yeah, its nothing to worry about. Its just to stop other people using your card. I think it verifies it with your bank, so Avengate won't see your password anyway.

Interestingly enough, I can buy as much crap as I want from Amazon or the like with my debit card, but should I try and pay taxes or bills my bank demands the password. I'm not sure why the bank believes someone would steal my debit card and proceed to pay my household bills rather than buy a load of crap from Amazon ....

Yeah, you'll still be able to mod the game. Wherever you get it from the module files will be there, and if not you can get hold of them just fine. The mod tools are a separate download as well
