Some things about heraldry I was told when I started working up a device for the SCA might be useful here...
You're basically working on heraldry here...and there's one basic rule: it is for identification on the battlefield. Thus, there are a couple things to think about: Bold, bright colors, and bold, vivid designs. As much as I think they're very nice, the designs here are full of small details, and other than that, not much more...no one is really going to appreciate those details on a battlefield. Basically, when it comes to heraldry, bigger and bolder is better. Also, contrast is very important...the updated Vaegir Standard is very good because the central figure is entirely different than the background. However, the Swadian Royal Guard kinda blends, at distance, into a bluish thing....best guidelines are: white or yellow against black, red, green, blue, purple, or the reverse, but never a mixture of the two type: red on black will not stand out, while red on gold, or white on black, those are very distinct, while yellow on white is a disaster.
I'll admit, these guidelines are limiting, but it helps for making things look good.
Just thought I'd toss in a couple pennies of advice.
Now, that said, regardless of their final forms, I really look forward to seeing these in game!
