if you tell your men to dismount, then steal one of their horses and tell them to remount the game will crash, it sounds to me like they are each tied to a specific horse, it might work better if you just told everyone to mount the closest horse to them that they could ride and didn't have anyone on it already, possibly including enemy ones if you wanted to.
