First, the game crashed and I was given a blue screen of death (this occured on the world map. My character is level 15). Then, when I rebooted and tried to start my M&B file up again, I was given this Assertion Failure message:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Assertion failed!

Program: C:Program FilesMount&Blademount&blade.exe
File: d:armagancreaturesrglrglFont.h
Line: 72

Expression: rgl_between(i_c,0, 128)

For information on how your program can cause an assertion failure, see the Visual C++ documentation on asserts.

(Press Retry to debug the application - JIT must be enabled.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a screenshot of the message.

Every time I hit "Ignore," the Assertion Failure message just pops up again and I get nowhere.
Is there a fix for this, or do I have to start a whole new game?

Does this happen only with that savegame? Apparently the savegames can be corrupted thats why it makes a backup of your previous save (old_game.wsg in your M&B directory). If this is the case, upload the savegame somewhere (like www.savefile.com or www.rapidshare.de ) and post the link to it. I'm sure someone can help you out with the more technical stuff but, that should get you started. Hope this was somewhat helpful.

Yup, only with that savegame. I'll try what you suggested. Except the "old_game" is an ".swg" file, not a .wsg like the others. What's up with that?
