Using other programs to make in game models

I have a question when it comes to making and importing models into the game.

Could I use like 3ds max 8 to make a new sword and import it into wings 3d to finish out the rest of the process that yoshiboy describes? (and could i do the UV mapping in 3ds max 8, then import it into wings to scale it?)

Or would it be easier to do all of Yoshiboy's process in 3ds max 8?

Its just that I am very comfortable and familiar with the layout and processes of 3ds max 8, and find it much easier to work with 3d models.

Use whatever you're comfortable with to make the model, just make sure it's an .obj and to scale before you try to put it into the game. A word of caution though with 3dsmax and Lurb's importer/exporter: there tend to be problems for some people (myself especially) when including max in the work pipeline of the model. I haven't gotten a single object that's gone through max (6) into the game successfully. So before spending alot of time on a model, I would first check to see that you can get it in without problems. Other people have done it successfully though, so you might be fine.

I use max 7, and it works fine. The only issue is that imported models have some flipped normals you'll need to find and flip back to the correct direction, however if you are making a new model its no problem.

These are the settings I use:
