Using a bow, 2 "bags" of arrows and a shield...

Just find out the combo with a bow, 2 "bags" of arrows and a shield doesn't work. I can shoot, but for some reason I cannot equip the shield. Why this? I am a horse archer and have practicaly no skills in melee weapons, so if I am knocked of the horse I am dead meat, no matter if I have a sword or not. Meanwhile having a shield is much mopre useful.
But I cannot equip "only" a shield? I think this should be possible - I see no reasons for the opposite!

What would you do with just a shield?

My trick to this was to keep my spare weapons/arrows in my inventory, so if the need arose for said weapons they could be accessed mid battle. Generally I'd keep arrows spare, and always carry a shield and melee weapon, in case I got knocked down from a horse.

Exactly!. When I play as horse archer, I carry an unnecessary melee weapon just to be able to use the shield. And I use this melee weapon extremely rarely.

Shield is nearly a "must" against those sea raiders or swadian deserters.

Yes! Cover behind the shield untill the xbowman/archer shoots then switch and attack. If unsuccessfull cover again etc

I use the fastest horse in the game, so I can be knocked down from the horse only if I am become unconsious (or very very negligent).

a key to put down weapon would be nice, or just unequip two handed weapon when pressing "next shield" (and you have a shield of course)

i swear there are only 4 slots, are you sure you have that shield out?

In reality, horse archers (especially in mongolian tribes) would use a small buckler that goes on their left (drawing) hand while their bow is held in the right hand. It was made of wood frame, with layers of bamboo (or was it bamboo frame with wood? bah) - any case it was light enough for them to be able to use the bow just as effectively, AND block incoming arrows.

Obviously these were not really large, so they had to have a really good hand / eye co-ordination to 'catch' the arrows with these. They offered nearly no protection against melee weapons, however, since they were specifically designed to not split from arrow impacts, they offered excellent protection from enemy arrows (providing the enemy decided to shoot them and not the horse, and providing they actually managed to block). Addition to such 'bow shields' would be of a great asset to the game ::D

Archers shields could come with a high power draw/horse archery skill to compensate for the difficulty in using the bow with a shield. Or just make a shield reduce the range/damage/accuracy slightly. Negatable perhaps by a high skill in an archery disipline or in shield skill.

i have noticed this with a polearms/throwing+shield character - once i have used up my throwing ammo i can't use the shield.

This really should be fixed...
