Useless companions?

Recruit
Is it possible to change how the AI rolls companions? As of now, every companion that I have hired has their skills specced according to the nickname, which is great. Their attribute points however are complete nonsense. If I pick up someone called "the Healer" that has 60 skill points in Healing I would expect him/her to have at least a few attribute points in Int. Now every attribute point is in VIG, END or CTR. This makes them next to useless.

What are your thoughts?

I agree, even leveling them is a horror show because companions you give a party or caravan cannot be leveled up by you anymore because they need to be in YOUR party... At first i was hoping for an eventual update where you can choose all of their skills and focus points when you recruit them, but that takes away from their "uniqueness" i feel that the nicknames bring...

The odd thing is that sometimes I'll recruit a companion with a bunch of free focus points to distribute, but most of the time they're already set. I hired a medic companion who had 8 free focus points which was pretty sweet since she's actually useful now (somewhat useful, i should say–the surgeon bonuses are pretty meager even with a skilled surgeon). In my first playthrough I hired a Scout who also had free focus points, but they disappeared afterwards.

Anyway, the latest patch introduces a lot of better companions who actually have skills. I've found a good Aserai engineer so far.

I have three companions with me and only the first one I hired has ever gained a skill point, and that's a single skill point in one handed.

It's a broken or unfinished system. Bad enough our own characters have a tough time leveling skills, but companions are basically stuck at the point where you hired them. For now.

While idk the rate or rareness, I have had a companion have a skill point raised while not in my party. In fact we had been separated in battle some months back and I had yet to go find them again. I assume the town they were in had been seized and they participated in the defence.

I think they just need a better adjustment. The issue is they are attempting to make companions stand up to the “nothing but” combat focus of the stock troops. But I think that is up to the player to deal with auxiliary forces running around with the troops. Wouldnt mind “healers” and “trackers” having a few more combat holes

I'd agree most if not all of the companions are way better than me at combat and I've been focusing on combat. I don't want companions who are useless on the battlefield but I'd prefer at least half of them to be focused on support like scout, medic etc.

Yes this. I've always used companions to take on roles my character wasn't good at. I always though that was the main benefit of the system.

Imo they're there to round out the "team" I don't mind warrior companions but even in Warband I made them have a secondary role such in having points in trainer or tactics etc. My character shouldn't have to do it all.

I am closing in on 60 hrs of playtime since I got the game and the only skills I seem to find on any Companions are fighting skills.
I have yet to see an engineer, a steward, a trader. rarely any tacticians (skill vl 60 is tops) , loads of rogues (if one can call lvl 60 good that is).

BUT:several really good fighters with 100+ in fighting, 80+ in riding. nice. but useless on the grand scheme of things.

if noone can really manage my kingdom while I am out conquering, why should I ever hire anyone after the initial few leaders / generals ? ?

there was a bug for a few patches that most companion templates weren’t spawning.

notice how they were almost all from Sturgia? You will find your trader/leader/tacticians more often as the Khuzait and Aserai companions are now fully spawning

Honestly right now the main point of companions is that you can use them for quests. Apart from that they are fairly useless.
