What is all of this stuff about caravans? Can't I just raise a company and join a faction as a merc leader? Do I have to be a merchant? I'd rather be a soldier

What this guy said.

Everyone talks about nothing but trade and caravans. What if I want combat and don't want to trade for hours before I can do it, thought WFaS stood for With Fire and Sword, not With Fur and Spices .

You will have to buy nice and very expansive armor and weapons, your army upkeep will be a few thousand. With 300 soldiers mine was almost 7,000. When you have to fight the enemy that has ~2,000 troops even with help of friendly lords you will still need lots of soldiers. You only need to trade to start out strong.

Got a barrack and stable how do i hire officers? and when I got that how do I make soldiers? or are they making automatic?

Talk to mayor, there is option for hiring people.
Once you have officers you can go to town center (same place as armor/weapon master, university) and talk to an officer and select which troops you want to order. It shows you example: 3 troops in 4 days. Once you order wait 3-4 days and visit that officer again to pick up troops.
When you're traveling you can access city menu from camp screen.

caravans dont do it for me, or just havent found a good route yet.

I have nice trade route where I buy spice/velvet/oil and sell it for tenfold amount easily, even with a low trade skill

spice 80-300 (around perekop) sell it in north and moscow terretory for 1100+
velvet 80-300 (around karsun) sell at rayzan 1200+
oil 50  (around krakow) TULA 600+

a few rounds and you have more then enough money to get started
Invest in a dutch double barreled gun, some musketeers soon you will be castle owner

Got some questions I hope could be answered;
1. How to you actually enter a storyline?
2. Is there a Storyline for each faction?
3. I read that there's at least a cossack and polish one, when you say cossack one do you mean the Muscovite or The one is the south?
4. Any step by step tip in the start to get the trade going?
edit: 5. Is it recommended to put points in trade when creating a character? If "yes" How many 2-3?

1. You need to talk to lords of faction you want to do a storyline for. They will give you special quests.
How do you start the Black Mace quest? Cossack story)
1. Receive a quest to burn Maslov brod (village near Kyiv) (this quest is given by Polish lord). When you get to the village, talk to elder and refuse to burn it.
2. Get quest to bring treasury
3. From Crimean lord you get a quest to defend village Sivash, when you get there and talk to village elder, cossacks appear ready to raid it, if you let them your relations will rise with cossacks.
If relations with Cossacks are 10+ talk to first lord you see and he gives you a defend a village quest. Storyline started.
Other two are started in a similar way.
2. Only for Poland, Cossacks and Muscovy.
3. I mean Cossack Hetmanate.
4. Do quests for lords, buy/sell items on market, sell loot, sell prisoners. Ass soon as you have ~3,000 send a medium priced (~50/unit) caravan, that should trigger patent quest. When you get the quest you need to collect 45,000 at this time don't send high prised caravans. It will take a while but it's worth it.

Whats up with the officers how do i get them how do i use them?
You need to build Stable and Barrack.
You hire them from mayors menu.
To use them go after trevious 2 steps were done go to town center and speak to him and order troops.

Sorry, could someone explain Caravans to me? I get that you buy them then escort them to another place, but I make huge losses on any I send. At first I spent 4k buying a reasonable good, got hit with the tax and only recouped 800, so a 3k loss. Decided i'd try a basic good like Wheat. Spend 4k on that, and I get 200 back, so I essentially just burned my money.

...help?

You need a permit with the value of 45k to avoid the taxes.

And how to send caravans without this permit ?
I get the same thing like Musthavename, i cant trade nothing without lossing the whole money.

Buy Spices or Velvet in the East and sell them at Moscow or Narva. Need around 10000 for a big caravan and get back ~80000

I just escaped the crazed czar imposter and am planning to become the new czar of Moscow. I just got 2 boyars on my side and want to know what to do next. Should I just begin raiding villages, I can gather a ~300-400 force right now. Should I try to take over a town already or should I go convincing other boyars to join me/do their quests?  :?:

Buy velvet and spice and other resources you can find cheaply in the south- then sell them in the north (Sweden or russia- I usally get the best deals from the swedish towns in the north)

Rode around with a pack of velvet and checked what the various markets offered and in the end I found an odd route; Kursk to Ryazan (very close together). Kursk buys velvet for 100ish, Ryazan (and other nearby cities) buy for 1600-1800. With a trade permit, the end result is 100k+ profit for a few seconds (hours) riding and mouse clicking.

Considering the relative difficulty it was to obtain the inital 50k for a permit and a caravan, it feels like cheating.

Thanks for the fast and great answers! Got another question
You mentioned how to start the cossack quest line. But do you know how to start the Muscovite one?

I don't get the velvet option for a caravan tho.
Also interesting to note, Ryazan buys linen and furs for alot. Don't have to go south to sell those.
