So a couple of weeks ago I was in IG Battlegrounds and someone got salty because I killed him with a Great Hammer. I was wondering if the use of hammers is publicly frowned upon, or if this guy was just angry with it.

It's really hard to use in competitive because of the slow overhead attack speed that makes you open for spam. It also shares the disadvantage of any two hand weapon in competitive, the lack of shield means you will be brought down quickly by archers. However, if pulled of right, the hammer can be a deadly tool in the right hands. So no, it's not a noob weapon.

Case of hammer beeing noob weapon comes in few flavors. In fight newbie vs newbie its rather weak due to its speed. Neebie cant figure better tactic than overhead swing.
When we talking about fight veteran vs veteran hammer is equally dangerous for both sides. Defender need to change usual tactic becouse block not gonna always work (this is reason why many get salty about it. You force them to change manufactured in hours of playing behavior) while attacker must keep in midn that he can get spammed easly.
I can understand ppl saying its op becouse if hammer player is rly good there is very little place for error on defender part. Many forget that horizontal hammer swing while not break block it ISNT in fact slow enough to allow hitting twice in defense with most normal weapons and fall in trap. I killed more ppl with horizonal hammer swing that overhead due to this. There is more. For example if opponent is on our side to not be spammed even when using horizontal swing you need to use proper swing direction.
So defender player is always in stress. Should I spam to prevent him from hitting me overhead? Or should I play it safe cause he can do normal swing as well?
There is also tactic I seen often which includes jumping back after swing from hammer player to get advantage of hammer short range. Can be predicted tho so not always work.
There are sure ways for hammer countering. Any weapon with speed of scimitars or simmilar can spam even normal hammer swing, which makes chances of actually landing overhead almost impossible. Top tier shields also help. Basicly the heavier is weapon/shield you use chances of blockign even overhead hammer swing are greater. Best rhodoc shields have very high hammer block factor.
Never seen hammer player doing chambers tho. This would be actually horryfing....
