Upgrading companions not in party

Any way to upgrade companions not in your party? Say a companion has a caravan and has some attribute/focus points as well as perks to choose, do you need to disband caravan and take into party to upgrade?

Yes, this is a big dysfunction in the game, you have dismantle parties and caravans to work the skills system on the companions. Not only that, my companions seem to get lost when I dismantle a caravan. They say they are at a particular castle but you go there and they do not show..

There is an option to let AI upg companions on its own - I think it works even if they are not in party - however I never used it as I assume it will choose different skills then I would want my companions to have...
