Back on topic, this is a good chart, but with a few corrections it would be perfect.

Ahh.. I thought there would be a way to get dark knights..

So the only way is to wait until they are defeated by another group of hostile enemies (which is very unlikely), and be taken prisoners, so I release them?
Well, I suppose I could fight a group of them until there are only 3-5 left, then retreat the battle and wait until they attack a caravan or something, and then attack a caravan myself..

actually I'm not sure that there is a way to get dark knights. I just used the unofficial editor to find out the upgrade paths.

You can get dark knights if you find an enemy party that has captured some, but that's the only way to do it without modding the game.

Also, I had no idea Sea Raider or River Pirates upgraded into anything.

I found out the hard way that Sea Raiders don't become something really scary when upgraded... Can you imagine a Sea Raider Hero or Champion? Dark Knights go to hell.
