How do I update this game without losing the save files?

If you mean the mod, then you can't. But you can go to "C:\Users\YourUser\Documents\Mount&Blade Warband Savegames" and move your savegame from a version to another, but it's not guaranteed that it will work.

What's the latest version? Does it include New Albion?

The latest version is currently 1.5 beta, but it doesn't include New Albion. However New Albion will be included in 1.6 beta which will come out this month.

is the vassal renown thing fixed in 1.6? ( I think the last one I played had that but can't remember if its was .4 or .5)  looking forward to freelancer definitely!
