Updated? getting back saves...

I know there have been millions of posts about this, but I am not sure any are really recent so: Is there a way to edit a save. I have played a character for a long time and then I discovered I should install a patch for the mod I am playing (The Horde Lands) but I don't want to lose all the things I have done some very lucky, like getting a castle exactly where I want it early in the game.

So I was wondering if there would be a way (any way) to get what I did on my earlier character onto my new character and still remain compatible with the new patch (I doubt copying over the stuff in the .sav file would work...

Any suggestions?

I've never seen it done before, but that doesn't mean it can't be.
