Sergeant Knight at Arms
UPDATED: Sunday the 29th of May, 2005.

Hello,

First off, I'd like to give a little praise to the developers of this wonderful game being that this is my first post and all- this is the kind of game I've been dreaming of for years :D. You've done a wonderful job and I hope you continue to improve and make the game better over the coming months and possibly even years!

------
Note: Any and all suggestions I have will be listed in this thread as I come up with them. I plan to keep this as a large archive of all my suggestions ;)

I. Fairgrounds
Now, onto the subject at hand: I think a good addition to this game would be the addition of medieval 'fairgrounds' type games, like jousting and archery compititions to name a few (I am unaware of any more but if you have any other additions that could fit into the game, please share them!).

A: Jousting; Jousting should be your classic type of jousting- two knights run at eachother on horseback with heavy armor/ shields and jousting lances, but the point/ gold allocation should take into effect some things (if at all possible):

1) Area that a lance hits- such as a head shot should award more gold than a hit to the shield.
2) Number of damage inflicted- the greater amount of damage should also award the proportional amount of money.
3) Whether the knight is dismounted or not- this should award the most amount of gold. I am not exactly sure how the game would handle this, but I am certain that certain shield hits and definately a blow to the head would dismount a jousting knight.

Or we could simply go another path that is a type of tournament game where a knight will definately be dismounted and moves on to the 'next round' if they win. The knight would be awarded the winning cash prize (or even an item) at the end of the jousting tournament. I am not sure what would be the best but I'm sure with the help of other's insight we can work things out.

B: Archery; Now, another fairground type game should be an archery competition. This is fairly straightforward- various archers are lined up at a certain point and have a limited amount of arrows to fire at a target. The target would have multiple rings around it with outermost rings earning lesser points, the bullseye in the center awarding the most points, and a shot that misses the target completely would be awarded no points. The range between the target and archer increases by a substantial amount (to be determined) as the archers progress through the rounds. At the end of the round, the four archers (out of the total of ten at the begining, possibly) then move on to the next round. After this, two more are booted out, and we're left with the final two. Then, obviously, the final two go head-to-head to see who can get the most points with the given amount of arrows.

Now we're down to the question of 'How is the money allocated to the archers?' Well, to answer that quite honestly: I'm not sure. We can either go for the 'all or nothing' type tournament or the 'Out first round- x gold, Out second round- 3x gold, Winner - 10x gold' or some such thing. We could also do a combination of the two, whereas the player chooses whether to play a 'Round-based' tournament or a 'All or nothing' tournament.

C: Setting; Also, with the setting: I do not know where this games could take place, but a good place to put them would be in the capital of the two current factions (forgive me, but I do not know the capitals of the factions at the moment- just got the game yesterday).

Well, thats it for the first portion... onto the next!

II. Environment & Environmental Effects
I believe that this has been already talked about on the forums a bit, but I think it would add much to the immersion of the game if there were different environments. Some examples of these would be swamplands, vast deserts, and cold snowy areas. I would also like to see dynamic changes of weather, like mobile storm systems with real-world precipitation like snow, sleet, hail, and rain- though I'm sure snow and rain would do quite well. Also, to go along with these changes, the battlefield should also be changed- in a rain storm, visibility would be lowered, and in a storm of snow, it would be even harder to see.

With additional areas of climate, there should also be new factions added that would apply to these areas. Like in the vast deserts, an 'arabian' type of faction could be added, that would be heavily dependant on horses. In snowy areas, a 'nordic' race could be added that wore heavy furs and such.

Note I'll add more as I get more ideas. Thanks for your time in reading this (or any of it) and I look forward to any criticism/ thoughts/ insight on what I've discussed :).

III. Attributes alter appearance

This may be impossible with the current system or extremely hard to implement but I'll share my thoughts on this anyway (and it might not fit the game perfectly, but oh well). Attributes should alter a player's graphical appearance (like the game Fable).

Strength: this causes the player's muscles to (for lack of a better word) 'bulge' out.

Agility: this causes the player's general body shape to slim.

Charisma: Not sure about this one. Could possibly add more 'edit face' options such as beards/ hairstyles, eye colors, etc.

Intelligence: I have absolutely no idea of what this should do  .

IV. Housing & Dwellings: Players should be able to own and live in a comfy place that they can call home- there would be various 'upgrades' for these and would range from a small shack to a full estate. Guards can be placed here. Items should be able to be stored here. At later levels, a stable will be added onto the estate so that a player can keep horses at his or her estate.

V. Minor additions

A. Party

1. Upgradeable Equipment: Players should be able to simply click a button on the party screen that would upgrade the equipment of a particular group of soldiers. This would be costly and there would be multiple 'levels' or even possibly types of upgrades. One could choose to upgrade armor and weapons- each would have their own levels. Such as three levels of armor and three levels of weaponry upgrades.

These upgrades would only need to be done once for a class of soldiers- equipment upgrades would be retained; example: The player upgrades the weapons of his archers (they now have longbows). All of the archers die, but because of him or her already previously buying the equipment (and merely taking it back off of the archer's corpses) he or she is able to hire archers that are automatically equipped with longbows.

Will be added to as new ideas come up ;). This section may have it's roman numeral changed so that it comes as the last section.

The idea behind the 'fairgames' and jousting sound very interesting to me. Much of it has been covered in other posts but I really like the direction you are going with all of it. Gambling on your skill vs. another's skill ... it is what makes the world go 'round.

:D Great ideas and welcome to the forum. :D

an archery contest where you have to shoot at still/moving targets at various distances is somthing i would play for hours on end.also, it would be nice if the speed of the fired arrow and the arc/straightness of the fired arrow were variables on the different bows. it would give some variety rather then just damage.

I'm glad you guys like my suggestions :). Fighting in the tournament games in Zendar is one of my favorite parts of this game so I thought it would be a great addition to add onto these types of in-town sporty activities. It is getting quite late where I live so I am very tired. Hopefully, I will be able to carry on the conversation tomorrow ;).

It seems someone is thinking alike about the fairgames.

What I'd like to see, is a tournament with three rounds. There would be an archery contest, jousting and a man-to-man melee. You'd get say 3 points for the 1st place, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. At the end of the tournament, the one with the best overall score would receive gold and glory (and perhaps a nifty custom shield/sword/whatever?). Others would get a portion of the value.

There could also be pure jousting tournaments etc. The tournaments would be announced in the public message boards in their respective towns, and the games would start like 4th of May, whether you are there or not.

I like most of the ideas, but jousting just wouldn't be fun under the current system. There would have to be some way to aim your lance, because as of right now, it would be a game of pure luck. But shooting at targets and stuff would but fun for hours on end, as mentioned above. Good ideas!

What I like about these ideas in general is that they utilize the strongest part of Mount&Blades: the combat system!

With all our bright ideas and big plans, we forget this isn't a big-time company that can implement all our pie-in-the-sky hopes.

BUT, ideas that play off M&Bs strengths: cool.

Plus, I need some more practice too.

Mr. Strange, even though there is not a large conglomerate of people designing & developing this game, it still does quite a better job than some huge 60+ person companies :D.

Back to the subject- if jousting is implemented, I agree that we'd need a way to aim the tip of our lances.

And thanks to you all for the praise :).

I don't know about you guys, but I'm able to aim the tip of the lance even with the current system. The arc is narrow, agreed, but it's big enought for jousting. On the other hand, it would benefit from a more accurate hit area simulation.

I would like to see titles implimented, so that when you join with a nation, like for example the swabians, you can potentially be knighted after completing a certain number of tasks, and then be allowed to participate in tournaments like a joust. Also, in a jousting tournament you should use the gear you have, rather than something that is given to you, like in the arena.

As another perk of being a titled person, how about lands? A stronghold where you can stash gear you want but can't carry. A constant source of income, and something to defend from bandit raiders (although this could be limiting, since you probably still want to be able to leave your stronghold).

And I know this would require a big rewrite, but is there any chance the equipment my troops have could be linked to the loot they take? Or buy off some sort of predefined table when you enter a town? Since it is a warband, each soldier ought to have their own unique equipment, and it adds to the immersiveness to see your troops wandering around with gear looted from the battle you have fought. Also gives more incentive not to spend too much time fighting weaker parties like peasants (i want to attack peasants damnit) and river pirates, since you'd end up with lots of caravan guards... on foot, with beanies and clubs.

More tournament competitions: ideas for one on one melee: halberds and maces were the most used weapons in 1 vs 1 fight (except the ones with special rules) also short swords were very common in tournaments.

Jousting: some tournaments had a special rule: if the loser in jousting does not faint and wishes to continue the battle, the loser would throw his glove as a mark of challenge. after this, the winner might accept the ghallnenge by picking up the glove. after that, the fight continued with short swords and sometimes with maces until one would give up.

This is a crazy but one idea wich suddenly popped into my mind. How about having a special system for one on one fights. you know the dancing games where you press buttons in seguence? that could be implemented into M&B by adding it to the 1 vs 1. you would have a turn to defend, wich means you bash the arrows or whatewer buttons in right order to defend againgst opponents attacks, and after the seguense ends, you would bash the buttons in an as difficult combo, that the enemys defense would crumble and you win. say like up arrow for slow but effective attack, down for faster but less effective stab, and left and right for balaced slashes. This probably sounds very stupid to all of you, but it is a fun idea.

I like the jousting idea. The system could have gauges that control your pitch and aim that move up and down like in bowling or three point shootout type games. It could be a way of settling disputes against parties with the leaders facing off with each other.

SirJodi and MichaelC, I would much rather prefer everything in real-time. I like the fighting style of the game as is. Though, those types of ideas with the current fighting system do sound a bit interesting.

Jousting could be done...

Juts make the horses run a specific path, and give the mouse control over aiming of the lance.

Archery could be great fun with increasing distances and perhaps 5 arrows each.

I like the tournament suggestions though theyve been made dozens of times before

An upgrade gear button on the party screen would be nice. Maybe for each troop type there would be 2 or 3 equipment upgrades possible that would cost a small fortune to aquire.vbbn nb mb

It would be a good way to blow the extra credits that the game lets you generate AND a nice way to address the urge some have to tinker with their soldiers gear (without paper-dolling them all).

Dear lord, I like the idea of jousts and archery tournaments, especially the latter. The more contests, the better.
If there were simples a way to raise or lower the lance jousting would work fine -- raise and lower the lance, turn the horse to turn the lance. Maybe just set a couple of buttons as 'raise lance' and 'lower lance' to permanently set it. (until you adjust it again)
 I want.

how about just a basic horse riding event.... say something a bit bigger than the arena, but with a circular boundry and fences. This event could depend on your riding skill, and you could either have a timed one, or a racing one, against NPCs.

Also it would be nice if we could choose what weapons to give the people in the tournament arena, or to have a different arena where we can customise it totally.

btw, this is my first post. :D (downloaded the game 2 days ago and havnt left it since)

We could have a competition in addition to various archery and crossbow events and the jousting. I'm thinking of a sort of targeting competition with the couched lance.

Imagine riding with free control of the horse towards a target (those big ones standing on a solid foot), the point is then to hit the target right so that it falls over. Again we would need a more free control of the lance as with the joust.

The half-life 2 mod Valandil, that is under development, will have a tournament mode. From what i know of the combat system, it will be more able to have a tournament system than Mount & Blade might.

Also, it's a multiplayer game.
