Units turning to companions

Recruit
With perma death being a thing. I've always grown attached to companions and even 'individual' recruits. Where I'd raise like 10 Nord recruits into 1 huscarl, and be attached to him as much as a companion. It would be great if highest level units could have an option to turn into companions if they distinguished themselves in battle. So you have others in the game raising from the bottom just like you are.

An event every so often that gives you the opportunity to spend money and influence to rise one of your top tier troops from the ranks to a companion would be sweet actually. Be a much more natural process of gathering them rather then picking them up in taverns.

And you'd be more invested.

Also if you could pick stragglers up from allied looted villages as like slightly higher level vengeful recruits.

I will be for it as long as there is no cheesy way to farm an indefinite amount of companions, that would just be silly

Why not ? An army of companions, that you have to equip and update yourself could be nice.
There won't be a cheesy way because I think the equipment of companions would be faaaaaaaaar more expensive than leveling up troops.
And you can make the price of high level companions very high (even more than in PoP)

This would be an useful and exciting feature for campaigns. It doesn't have to be a common occurrence, most troops aren't likely to be companion material and often may lack the courage or interest for it. Even if you manage to get a lot of them, it would be expensive and tricky to maintain a party where people get along.

You have a limit on the number of companions you can have in each party, anyway. Probably depends on your Clan renown, but I think you start with a maximum of 6.

Don't think it would be cheesy even if you could have a 100 companions army if perma-death applies to them aswell and i think it will, it would be strange to play as your grandson and he still had his granddad companions in his party looking just as young as when he met them for the first time.

It's a nice feature to have, thinking about a huskarl surviving multiple battles, killed tons of enemies and finally turn into a companion is realy exciting

Plus, if you had like vanilla warband they would squabble and eventually leave. And if you had a high enough charisma to maintain all those relationships, why not have an army of companions....

They'd be a pain to maintain though.

Actually I think the Floris Mod pack lets you do this.

I got a scene with one of my veteran troops where he pledged to follow me to the ends of the earth, and then he became a companion character. His name was stuck as the troop title though. It only happened once, and I've never figured out exactly what caused it to occur. I can still remember the guy's quote. "For you my lord, the blood on my sword shall never dry!"

If someone knows what specific mod in that pack made that possible I would dearly love to know, cause that was awesome.

That aside. It is a very cool idea and it may work here if the companions work the way I think they do and they are largely generated. No Bunduks, Artimenners or Jerimus's here I'm afraid.

As for the idea breaking the game... I doubt it. As long as it is at least kinda rare I don't think it'll be an issue. Equipping and training just a few companions was expensive, dull and time consuming in Warband, and they never really accomplished much more than the regular soldiers. While the potential for abuse is there, I guarantee there are going to be far easier ways to break Bannerlord than companion spam.

Very interesting idea to consider, it would certainly be a pleasant surprise if it makes it into the base game!
