Recruit
I confront a unit of mountain bandits. That unit has a lot of prisoners.

1) If I allow them to join me, the prisoners disappear.
2) If I fight, I can recruit the prisoners

If I want to recruit their bandit units and prisoner units, that isn't possible. Is that intentional?

The prisoners see you happily rubbing shoulders with their erstwhile captors (the bandits), of course they don't want to join you!

That is how I initially viewed it, but it isn't so different from having prisoners to then becoming some of the most powerful units in my army. If that is the case, I should then have the option that when the bandit party joins my group, I can take their prisoners as my own. Does that make sense? Who was once their prisoners is now my prisoners.

The prisoner of my prisoner is my prisoner... wait no, the prisoner of my coerced recruit is my future coerced recruit.

That does actually make sense, but there's also an argument for being able to recruit the prisoners immediately as you would if you defeated their captors.

For me, the logical thing to have happen in most instances when you have overwhelming force encounter bandits with prisoners, is that the bandits become your prisoners (surrender) and their prisoners become your grateful recruits. The bandit surrender case does happen sometimes, not sure if you get their prisoners when they do - they might vanish in the same way they do when you recruit the bandits, and that would definitely be a bug.

Sure. Basically you can choose - free the captives (who will join you) and imprison the Bandits - or the other way around. Also more balanced than having the option of getting both.
